Sunday, Nov. 2, 2 pm, Tattoo Nation

See portions of the 2013 documentary Tattoo Nation and hear from Director Eric Schwartz in the History Museum auditorium. Schwartz will discuss how he was gradually allowed into the inner circle of Chicano artists where he learned about the prison practice of tattooing images of the Virgin Mary for divine protection, to pay respect, or to seek penance. Musician Kenny Passarelli will present a piece inspired by Our Lady of Guadalupe and Santa Fe’s Santuario de Guadalupe. Part of the exhibit Painting the Divine: Images of Mary in the New World, the event is free with admission; Sundays are free to NM residents. Download stills from the movie by clicking here, as well as here. A portrait of Eric Schwartz is available by clicking here.

Friday, Nov. 7, 6 pm, opening of Gustave Baumann and Friends: Artist Cards from Holidays Past

See handmade selections by everyone’s favorite artist-printer and other notable artists spanning 1918 to 1970. Palace Press Director Tom Leech and guest curator Jean Moss lead a gallery walk and sign brand-new editions of the Museum of New Mexico Press book accompanying the exhibit. Light refreshments. Free admission from 5–8 pm. Learn more about the exhibit by clicking here. Download photos from the exhibit by clicking here.

Saturday, Nov. 8, 10 am–2 pm, Santa Fe Book Arts Group flea market

Get a crafty start on the holidays as the Palace Press and the Santa Fe Book Arts Group clean out their studios. Purchase art and craft supplies, handmade books and papers, ephemera, gifts and more in the Meem Community Room and History Museum classroom. Come to browse, discover some wonderful treasures, and get inspired to create your own. Free admission through the Washington Avenue doors.

Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 15 and 16, Holiday Card Workshops

See the exhibit Gustave Baumann and Friends: Artist Cards from Holidays Past, then come to the classroom for all-ages card-printing workshops. On Saturday, from 1–3 pm, Lee Kellogg of Guadalupe’s Fun Rubber Stamps leads “Holiday Cards for the Fun of It.” Bring your favorite coloring tools (crayons, pencils, markers, etc.), and we’ll provide papers, envelopes, glue sticks and stamping supplies. It’s free with admission. For information, call Tom Leech at 476-5096 or shoot an email to thomas.leech@state.nm.us. On Sunday, from 1:30–3:30 pm, educators René Harris and Melanie LaBorwit help you discover an easy way to make beautiful handmade cards with Styrofoam ink-block printmaking. (Consider the wisdom of wearing messy clothes.) Get a jump on holiday card-making by learning a technique you can use at home. Free with admission; Sundays free to NM residents.

Wednesday, Nov. 19, noon, “New Mexico Beer—Now and Then”

New Mexico brewing began in the 1850s with small breweries that were wiped out by Prohibition. Not until 1988 did craft brewers stage a renaissance. Jon C. Stott describes its evolution in this Brainpower & Brownbags Lecture. Stott is the author of New Mexico Beer: A History of Brewing in the Land of Enchantment (History Press, 2014). Free admission through the museum’s Washington Avenue doors.

Thursday, Nov. 27, closed for Thanksgiving

Winter Hours: In November, we begin closing on Mondays through April, and Free Friday Nights change from every week to the first Friday of each month, also through April.

LOOKING AHEAD…

Friday, Dec. 12, 5:30–8 pm, Christmas at the Palace

Santa Fe’s beloved event celebrates its 30th anniversary with hot cider, cookies, live music, piñatas, craft-making activities, a chance to operate an antique printing press and the visit of Mr. and Mrs. Claus. A free, family event. (Donations of non-perishable food welcomed.) Download images by clicking here.

Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 13 and 14, 10 am–4 pm, Young Native Artists Holiday Show and Sale

Children and grandchildren of the Palace Portal artisans will display their own creations in the Meem Community Room and History Museum classroom. Pick up some nifty Christmas presents and support the next generation of Native artisans. Enter for free through the museum’s Washington Avenue doors. Download images by clicking here.

Sunday, Dec. 14, 5:30–7 pm, Las Posadas

The annual candle-lit procession of Las Posadas travels around the Santa Fe Plaza and concludes in the Palace Courtyard. This version of an old Hispanic tradition recreates Mary and Joseph’s search for a place to give birth to the Baby Jesus and throws in a few devils for good measure. Stay for carols in the Palace Courtyard, along with cookies and refreshments. Free and open to the public. Download images by clicking here.
