Experience Santa Fe Collaboration Presents: 2019 Spring and Summer Art Markets

March 7, 2019 (Santa Fe, NM)— It is true that in Santa Fe, NM, the confluence of arts and culture informed over centuries inspires those who visit the city to seek immersive and memorable experiences not normally found elsewhere. Those experiences, often informed with art, performance, and local cuisine, can be found most succinctly during spring and summer months, beautifully framed with gorgeous weather, endless outdoor activities, and a living and dynamic history. 

Experience Santa Fe captures the essence of our most and complex and rich cultural traditions. An arts and culture collaborative, Experience Santa Fe is comprised of seven partnering organizations, including the International Folk Art Market, the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture, the Museum of International Folk Art, the Museum of Spanish Colonial Art, the Santa Fe Botanical Garden, the Santa Fe Indian Market, and the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian.

Four markets emerge from the partnering organizations, Native Treasures Art Market, the International Folk Art Market, Traditional Spanish Market, and Indian Market, taking place from the last weekend of May to mid-August, 2019. The spectrum of artists, more than 500 between participating organizations, bring works inspired by a myriad of cultures, representing more than 60 countries and Native American Nations.  Each Market highlights the masters of their craft in celebration of these traditions while encouraging economic and artistic sustainability for future generations. 


Native Treasures Art Market

Location: The Santa Fe Convention Center

Time: Saturday, 10:00am to 5:00pm and Sunday, 9:00am to 4:00pm  

Date: Memorial Weekend, May 25 and 26, 2019

Ticket Information: Saturday and Sunday: $20.00

Saturday only: $15.00

The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture will feature premier Native artists at the Native Treasures Art Market, occurring Memorial Day Weekend. Artistic mediums include jewelry, pottery, paintings, photography, and ceramics at the Santa Fe Convention Center. The market begins at 10:00 am both days with an early-bird option on Saturday, providing attendees the opportunity to pursue exclusive works by artists who have garnered national acclaim for their craft. 


International Folk Art Market

Location: Museum Hill Plaza

Time: 10:00 am to 5:00 pm on Saturday and 9:00 am to 5:00 pm on Sunday

Date: July 12, 13, and 14, 2019

Tickets: Friday night opening parts: $225 per person; $20.00 for Saturday’s market, and $15.00 for Sunday’s Market

Celebrating its 16thyear, the International Folk Art Market brings art rooted in diverse traditions from more than fifty countries to Santa Fe. The Market runs July 12, 13 and 14, 2019, at Museum Hill Plaza from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm on Saturday and 9:00 am to 5:00 pm on Sunday. Aside from the Market, organizers will host an opening party on July 12 at 6:30 pm and an early bird Market Saturday morning from 7:30 am to 10:00, prior to the general opening.  

Many participating artists keep the traditional arts alive by maintaining classic techniques and creating contemporary forms indicative of their cultures or social movements. Among the fifty countries, the Folk Art Market proudly invites three new-comers from Iraq, Bulgaria, and Australia. In addition to internationally-based artists, the Market presents four United States artists for the first time, celebrating US diversity.  


Traditional Spanish Market

Location: Santa Fe Plaza

Time: 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Saturday and Sunday

Date: July 26, 27 and 28, 2019

Tickets: Traditional Spanish Market is free for attendees. Preview on July 26, 2019, is $80.00 for collector’s hour from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm and $20.00 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Tickets may be purchased at the door or by calling (505) 982-2226.

On July 27and 28, 2019, Traditional Spanish Market comes to Santa Fe for its 68thyear. The market showcases eighteen categories from New Mexico and Colorado’s leaders of Hispanic traditional arts. Attendees will have the opportunity to purchase works on Saturday and Sunday, from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Special events include a Market Preview on Friday night, where participating artists compete for awards with their best works, all of which are available for purchase before Market begins. Throughout the weekend, musicians will play at the gazebo and a mass with a procession from the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi will be held on Sunday. Organizers plan to host ¡Viva La Cultura!, a week of lectures, movies, music, and immersive events in the week leading up the Traditional Spanish Market, celebrating local Hispanic arts and influence.

Spanish Market hosts approximately 250 artists practicing traditional arts traced back more than 400 years. Participant specifications require a level of mastery and regional lineage. Each adult artist is juried into their category while youth artists are mentored by one of the Market adults, ensuring the continuance and evolution of the Spanish traditional arts legacy. 


Indian Market

Location: Santa Fe Plaza, with accompanying events around the city

The 98thannual Santa Fe Indian Art market will occur during the third week of August, bringing approximately 1,000 artists from more than 200 Native tribes in North America. The market is the largest Native arts market in the world, drawing crowds of more than 117,000. Artists bring contemporary and historic arts learned of traditional Native craft. Categories range from pottery, jewelry, fashion, basketry, and more, back-dropped by performances and entertainment.  

The Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian will host a series of art demonstrations and auctions leading up to the market itself. Thursday, August 15, 2019, The Wheelwright Campus hosts an auction of contemporary and historic arts. On Friday morning at the museum’s plaza, attend artist demonstrations from nationally acclaimed artists of Native works and bid on items at a live auction before the works go to market the following day. 

The Southwestern Association for Indian Arts will hold several events leading up to market, including The Native Cinema Showcase, beginning Tuesday, August 13, 2019. Market-specific events include a sneak preview of award-winning art from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm on Friday, August 16, 2019. Attendees will have the chance to peruse works from Native a before the general preview from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm at the Santa Fe Convention Center. The annual Indian Market Auction and Gala will take place at the Santa Fe Community Convention Center at 6:00 pm. The evening’s events include performances by musicians as well as silent and live auctions. SWIAI closes Indian Market with the 6thannual Haute Couture Fashion Show, highlighting indigenous fashion designers who glean inspiration from their cultures. The fashion show takes place at the Santa Fe Community Convention Center on August 18, 2019, at 2:00 pm.
