(Albuquerque, New Mexico) – On Saturday, April 25, 2020, the National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC) in Albuquerque, New Mexico, hosts its second annual Children’s Bilingual Book Festival, the only one of its kind in the U.S. that features children’s books in Spanish and English and Native languages and English. This free festival emphasizes books for readers in grades K-6, though there are activities for children of all ages, including teens and families. From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. there will readings (geared for young audiences), a book fair, workshops for teachers and parents, storytelling and recitations of poetry in English, Spanish and Native languages by children, book and art-related activities, entertainment and much more.
The day will begin with a broadcast of the KUNM Children’s Hour featuring children telling stories in Diné, Spanish and English, the opening of the book fair and followed by readings with authors Alexandra Diaz (The Only Road/El único destino), Linda Boyden (Powwow’s Coming), Cathy Camper (Lowriders in Space), among other authors. The festival will also launch, for the second year, a summer reading program which pairs children in grades 3 and 4 who struggle with reading with qualified tutors who provide one-on-one and group tutoring at the NHCC over the summer. Parents can apply here.
