Through Georgia’s Eyes – National Book Festival 2020

The New Mexico State Library has chosen Through Georgia’s Eyes, written by Rachel Rodriguez and illustrated by Julie Paschkis, published by Henry Holt and Company, as the book which will represent New Mexico in the Road Map to Reading - Great Reads from Great Places parade of the states at the 2020 National Book Festival. Rachel Rodriguez is an award winning author of several children’s books and Julie Paschkis has been illustrating books since 1992.  When told Through Georgia’s Eyes would be representing the state of New Mexico at the National Book Festival this year, Rachel said, “I’m honored and delighted at this news.” Julie Paschkis said, “Wow! That is wonderful news!”

Through Georgia’s Eyes is a gorgeous, evocative children’s biography of one of America’s most beloved artists. Georgia O’Keefe saw the world differently from most people. As a child she roamed the prairie with a sketch pad in her hand, struggling to capture on paper what she saw all around her. At art school she learned to speak in paint on canvas. But Georgia felt confined by city life. She longed for vast expanses of space and she found it in the red hills and silent deserts of New Mexico. Lyrical and vivid, this book is a portrait of an exceptional artist, a woman whose eyes were open to the wideness and wonder of the world.

The National Book Festival, organized and sponsored by the Library of Congress, is celebrating the twentieth year of the festival.  This popular event celebrating the joys of reading and lifelong literacy will be held online September 25 through 27. To learn more about the National Book Festival, Through Georgia’s Eyes, or see a list of the books chosen by New Mexico in previous years, please see https://bookfestival.nmculture.org/ which also includes various activities for children.

The Parade of the States promotes the reading, library, literary and literacy programs and events in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the US trusts and territories.  When people enter the Parade portion of the virtual festival experience, they will discover Great Reads From Great Places all around the United States.  Each state selects a work of either fiction or non-fiction about the state or by an author from the state which is a good read for children or young adults who are the primary audience for the Parade of the States.  The Parade is always very popular and is a celebration of books and reading throughout the country.

The Parade of the States is organized by the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress and sponsored by the Institute for Museum and Library Services.
