Enter spring like a history lion by attending these special events in March:

Friday, March 4, 9 am–4 pm: Palace Guard day trip to Albuquerque

Members of our Friends group, the Palace Guard, will carpool to Albuquerque to see a private collection of Civil War material; savor lunch at Los Poblanos and tour its John Gaw Meem–designed buildings; and tour UNM’s Zimmerman Library with Meem Curator Audra Bellmore. Call (505) 982-6366, ext. 119 for reservations and details.

Friday, March 4, 6 pm: “1623 in Print in New Mexico”

State Historian Rick Hendricks talks about the books Spanish colonists were reading in the year that Shakespeare’s First Folio was printed. (Shakespeare may have read them, too!) A Free First Friday Evening event. Free

Sunday, March 6, 2 pm: “Pancho Villa and the US Army: A Training Ground for World War I”

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of Pancho Villa’s March 9, 1916, raid on Columbus, NM, noted author and photographer Jeff Lowdermilk and Helen Patton, granddaughter of General George S. Patton, speak in the museum auditorium. What caused the attack and what did we learn from it? Free with admission; Sundays are free to NM residents. Seating is limited.

Monday, March 7, 10 am–noon, Member Monday

Museum of New Mexico Foundation members at the Family/Grandparents level and above are invited to a guided tour of the Palace of the Governors, along with tours of Stage, Setting, Mood and 2016 Alcoves at the New Mexico Museum of Art. For information, call (505) 982-6366, ext. 107.

Sunday, March 13, 2 pm: Exhibition opening for Santa Fe Faces

Meet Santa Fe photographer Alan Pearlman and see his photography exhibit in the Mezzanine Gallery. A retired physician and loyal Palace of the Governors Photo Archives volunteer, Pearlman recently donated 200 archival prints to the museum’s Photo Legacy Project. This exhibit features portraits he took from 2009–2013, during a quest to capture the soul of Santa Fe. Free with admission; Sundays free to NM residents.

Sunday, March 13: Last day to see Painting the Divine: Images of Mary in the New World

An extensive collection of gorgeous Spanish colonial paintings are going back into storage. Before they do, see these works from Spain’s colonial capitals of Peru, Mexico and New Mexico. Learn how they demonstrate the role of faith in harsh frontiers and how religious art evolved in those places. Free with admission; Sundays free to NM residents.

Sunday, March 20, 1:30–3:30 pm: Families Make History workshop

Celebrate National Women’s History Month by learning about women’s domestic arts in Spanish colonial New Mexico. Join us for a colcha stitch-in with Beatrice Maestas Sandoval, a master artist whose work has been recognized as exemplary at Spanish Market. Free with admission. Sundays free to NM residents; children 16 and under free daily. Families Make History free workshops are held the third Sunday of every month.

Sunday March 27: Closed for Easter

We look forward to seeing you on at 10 am on Tuesday, March 29, when the museum reopens.

Wednesday, March 30, noon: Brainpower & Brownbags Lecture

Binghamton University doctoral student Michael Cangemi speaks on “The `Killer President of Guatemala’: Reconsidering Ambassador Frank Ortiz.” Lectures are free in the Meem Community Room. Seating is limited.
