The New Mexico Museum of Art (NMMOA) and the Museum of New Mexico Foundation are excited to announce that construction work will begin this week on the New Mexico Museum of Art Vladem Contemporary on the site of the Halpin Building in the Railyard District in Santa Fe. This moves the museum one step closer to the vision of a dedicated space for contemporary art to complement the historic 1917 building on the Santa Fe Plaza.

Bradbury Stamm Construction of Albuquerque was selected on Jan. 25 as the general contractor for the NMMOA Vladem Contemporary. The $14.1 million construction project is expected to be completed in 14 months.

Architecture firms DNCA of Santa Fe and Studio GP of Albuquerque collaborated on the design of NMMOA Vladem Contemporary, which consists of a 15,000-square-foot addition bridging over the existing 20,000-square-foot brick and steel warehouse.

Initial work will involve the creation of access points and the building of ramps to reach the main floor and basement levels. Demolition of the concrete floor in the basement and shoring up of the historic building will occur in advance of further renovation.

To protect workers on site, the Multi Cultural mural on the east side of the Halpin Building will be covered. It will be retired as a part of the renovation, and the museum plans to acknowledge the mural and its history with a display in the interior.

Once open to the public, the New Mexico Museum of Art Vladem Contemporary will present ambitious contemporary exhibitions, highlight working artists, and provide space for expanded educational programs.
