FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Jan. 18, 2018 (Santa Fe, NM)—Having just celebrated its 100th anniversary in November 2017, the Museum of Art is now actively engaged in shaping its next century by inviting a group of 19 artists working in New Mexico to be guest contributors to its Instagram account (follow us at @newmexicoartmuseum). Inaugurating the series is Albuquerque-based photographer Noah McLaurine, who will begin posting the week of January 21.

The electronic images will be viewable globally by anyone with access to Instagram who chooses to follow the museum account. They can also be seen on a touch-screen monitor in the exhibition Shifting Light: Photographic Perspectives (on view through October 7, 2018).

“The museum has an international collection of about 9,000 photographic prints,” said Curator of Photographs Katherine Ware, “but we also understand that today people view photographs most often on a screen.”

Each artist has been invited to contribute images for a week and will create work related to a theme from the exhibition (Land/Place, Culture/Identity, Community/Interconnectivity, or Vision/Creativity), creating a dynamic relationship between pictures online and pictures on the wall. Among the contributors are Jonathan Blaustein, Carola Clift, Kelly Eckel, Danae Falliers, Noah McLaurine, Aziza Murray, Ilona Pachler, Donald Woodman, and Zoë Zimmerman.

“The Instagram initiative gives us a chance to work with artists in New Mexico in a new and contemporary way,” Ware said. “It also allows us to connect with audiences that may not consider themselves museum-goers or who can’t easily get to Santa Fe.”

Schedule of first 10 artists is as follows:

  • Jan. 21-27           Noah McLaurine Feb. 4-10             Carola Clift

  • Feb. 18-24           Jonathan Blaustein

The New Mexico Museum of Art, founded in 1917 as the Art Gallery of the Museum of New Mexico, is housed in a spectacular Pueblo Revival building designed by I. H. and William M. Rapp based on their New Mexico building at the Panama-California Exposition (1915). The museum’s architecture inaugurated what has come to be known as “Santa Fe Style.” For nearly 100 years, the Museum has celebrated the diversity of the visual arts and the legacy of New Mexico as a cultural crossroads by collecting and exhibiting work by leading artists from New Mexico and elsewhere. This tradition continues today with a wide-array of exhibitions with work from the world’s leading artists. The New Mexico Museum of Art brings the art of New Mexico to the world and the art of the world to New Mexico.
