(Santa Fe, New Mexico) – New Mexico Historic Sites are hosting two major commemorative events in August. The 16th annual Pueblo Independence Day celebration will be held Sunday, Aug. 11, in the village of Jemez Springs. The event commemorates the events of Aug. 10, 1680— when the Pueblo People of New Mexico and Arizona launched a successful rebellion against Spanish colonization. Later in August, the Bosque Redondo Memorial at Fort Sumner launches Summer Letters from the Reservation, a series of letters and oral histories on the lives of the people at Bosque Redondo reservation. On August 11, 2019, the San Ildefonso Tewa Women’s Club hosts the opening San Ildefonso Pottery, 1600—1930: Voices of the Clay at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture (MIAC) from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Events include a Pueblo feast, celebration, and performances exemplifying the exhibition’s narrative, presented from the Pueblo’s perspective for the first time in San Ildefonso’s history. In illustrating portions of that narrative, co-curator Russell Sanchez (San Ildefonso) fired a pot on July 15, 2019, relaying histories behind his work.

MIAC presents a series of lectures on August 15, 2019, at 1:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m., and 3:00 p.m. in advance of Indian Market. The lectures will teach patrons how to distinguish between highly sought-after Native arts that bring audiences from all over the world and their counterparts masquerading as Native arts. The three lecture topics include weaving and textiles, turquoise and jewelry, and varied prints. Each lecturer is a professional artist, collector, or educator, centering their discussions on skills cultivated through generations across the country.

The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture hosts Cochiti artists Diego and Mateo Romero as they create a mural confronting the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women epidemic on Sunday, August 4, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. As part of the Romero Brothers’ current exhibition, The Brothers Chongo: A Tragic Comedy in Two Parts, the mural will be painted at Milner Plaza where guests can interact and speak with the artists.

(Santa Fe, New Mexico) –July 20th marks the 50th anniversary of NASA’S historic Apollo 11 Moon landing with a collaboration titled the Moon Fiesta. The New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs is commemorating the Apollo Moon landing with Moon Fiesta events at these facilities: the New Mexico History Museum (NMHM) in Santa Fe, as well as The Screen, presented by the Center for Contemporary Arts; the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science (NMMNHS); The New Mexico State Libraries; and National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC) in Albuquerque; and the New Mexico Museum of Space History (NMMSH) in Alamogordo, which has devoted extensive programming to the Apollo Moon Landing, beginning in January of this anniversary year.
“Our Department of Cultural Affairs has engineered a summer full of incredibly informative and fun events across all different media and across the state,” Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said. “This was a seminal moment in our nation’s history. All through this anniversary season, New Mexicans will have every opportunity to relive it, learn about it for the first time and dive into the memory of humankind’s first steps on the moon.”
More than 400,000 people were involved in one capacity or another in the Apollo 11 mission to the moon on July 20, 1969. The collaborative effort marked the advancement not only in space exploration but in mathematics, sciences, and technology. More than 600 million people around the globe watched as the Apollo 11 team took humankind’s first steps on the moon and in the wake of these steps came expeditions into space, both manned and machine-operated.

The 16th-annual Ice Cream Sunday, which happens to land on National Ice Cream Day, is from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on July 21. The event routinely draws more than a thousand people.
Admission for Ice Cream Sunday is the same as regular museum admission: $5 for adults, $4 for senior citizens and $3 for children ages 4 to 17. Children 3 and under are admitted free.

Albuquerque, N.M.--Festival Ballet Albuquerque, in partnership with the National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC), presents Sacred Journeys II on Aug. 24-25, 2019. In this show, classical and contemporary dance combine with the eclectic music of two-time Grammy award-winning Taos Pueblo musician Robert Mirabal in a reflection of New Mexican cultures through dance, music, and spoken word. Performances will take place in the Albuquerque Journal Theatre at 7 p.m., on Saturday and 2 p.m., on Sunday. Tickets are $14, $20, $29, $39 and $48, with a $2 discount for seniors, children 10 and younger and NHCC members. (Santa Fe, New Mexico) -- On May 17, New Mexico Historic Sites and the Pueblo of Jemez won the Archaeology Heritage Preservation Award, by New Mexico Historic Preservation Division and the New Mexico Cultural Properties Review Committee. The award was presented at the 2019 New Mexico Historic Preservation Awards for collaboration during the “Dig Giusewa” Project.
New Mexico Historic Sites Director Patrick Moore Moore, Tribal Historic Preservation Officer Christopher Toya, Manager Matthew Barbour, Coordinator Ethan Ortega, and Coordinator Marlon Magdalena were on hand to receive the honor which was presented by New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs Secretary Debra Garcia y Griego and Cultural Properties Review Committee Member and Historical Archaeologist Douglas Boggess.

(Albuquerque, New Mexico) -- New Mexico’s Bisti Beast will be welcomed home with Japanese performances and food at a celebration June 22 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science. The museum’s newest attraction, the Bisti Beast is a robotic dinosaur based on the skull found in the Four Corners area of New Mexico.
