Michael P. Berman
New Mexico Museum of Art
10:00 AM - 11:00 AM
Keynote lecture for Earth Now
Untrammeled: A Model for Wilderness
Working in black-and-white with a large camera, the artist Michael P. Berman acknowledges his place in the landscape photography tradition established by Ansel Adams. Like Adams, Berman's emphasis is on a profound appreciation of the land that is based on direct personal experience of the places he photographs. While Adams advocated for legislation aimed at protecting some of the continent's most dramatic and unusual geographic features, Berman has concentrated his attention on lands damaged by neglect or overuse. Some are public spaces that have received too much attention, while others are protected from human traffic by extreme aridity, political boundaries, military use, or the presence of toxic substances.
In this keynote address for the exhibition Earth Now: American Photographers and the Environment, Berman brings together his training as a biologist and a photographer to discuss the concept of “untrammeled wilderness” and why it may be a useful strategy in mediating human demands on the landscape. A series of the artist’s photographs will be screened during his talk.

Late in the summer of 1670, five traders crossed the Jornada del Muerto on their way to Parral, in present-day Chihuahua. Dr. Joseph P. Sánchez explores the case against Gruber and his daring attempt to escape New Mexico in the 2011 Santa Fe Fiesta Lecture, “Death Along the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, 1670: The Bernardo Gruber Story.” The lecture takes places at 6 pm on Wednesday, Sept. 7, in the History Museum Auditorium. Photographer Jack Parsons and Friends
In his upcoming book, Dark Beauty: Photographs of New Mexico (Hudson Hills Press), Jack Parsons opens his darkroom door to reveal many photographs not seen in the fifteen books that already showcase his work over the last twenty-five years. More brooding and willing to explore the harsh realities of New Mexico’s poverty and racism, these photographs present an honest assessment of the state, one that digs deeper than the elegant photography in his earlier books, like El Rancho de las Golondrinas and Low ’n Slow: Lowriding in New Mexico (both Museum of New Mexico Press).
Join him at 2 pm on Sunday, Sept. 18, for a book release party and panel discussion including Dark Beauty author Frederick Turner, author and longtime collaborator Carmella Padilla, and book designer David Skolkin. The event is free in the New Mexico History Museum Auditorium.

Donald Jackson: Illuminating the Word
New Mexico History Museum
6:00 PM - 7:00 PM
A special event for The Saint John’s Bible
Enjoy a special presentation by one of the world’s foremost calligraphers, Donald Jackson, artistic director of The Saint John’s Bible and senior scribe to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s Crown Office at the House of Lords.
“Donald Jackson: Illuminating the Word,” will be held on Monday, Nov. 7, at 6 pm, at the Lensic Performing Arts Center in downtown Santa Fe. Tickets are $15. A private reception following is $50. Tickets are available at www.ticketssantafe.org or (505) 988-1234.
Illuminating the Word: The Saint John’s Bible, on exhibit at the New Mexico History Museum through April 7, represents Jackson’s crowning achievement—the fulfillment of a goal he began nurturing as a young boy. Jackson oversaw a team of scribes who handwrote and illuminated every page of the Bible on behalf of the Benedictine monks at Saint John’s University in Collegeville, Minn. The project was completed this fall; after the History Museum’s exhibition of pages from the Wisdom Books and Prophets volumes of the work, the pages will be bound and placed in the care of the monastery.
