New winter hours
New Mexico History Museum
Starting November 1, the New Mexico History Museum switches to its winter hours, meaning we will be closed on Mondays and observe Free Friday Evenings only on the first Friday of each month (rather than every week).
Winter hours, November through April: 10 am to 5 pm Tuesday through Sunday; Free Friday Evening, 5-8 pm, the first Friday of each month. Closed Thanksgiving day, Christmas, New Year’s Day and Easter Sunday.

Palace Press Director Tom Leech and Santa Fe author Jean Moss highlight selections by everyone’s favorite artist-printer at the launch for Gustave Baumann and Friends: Artist Cards from Holidays Past, a new Museum of New Mexico Press book and a companion to a new exhibit in the Mezzanine Gallery. Did you miss Stephen Fried’s standing-room-only Brainpower & Brownbags Lecture on Oct. 29? He’s agreed to give a repeat of it at noon on Friday, Nov. 7, in the History Museum Auditorium. (Note: Seating is limited.) Author of the best-selling biography, Appetite for America, Fried speaks on “Fred Harvey, the Hotel Castañeda, and the Future of the Past in Railroad New Mexico.” Fried is an expert on the legacy of Fred Harvey and his many Harvey Houses, including the soon-to-be-renovated Hotel Castañeda in Las Vegas, NM.
The lecture is free and open to the public.

What if everything we thought we knew about Billy the Kid was wrong?
Historian and foremost Lincoln County War and Billy the Kid author, Frederick Nolan, will be at Lincoln Historic Site on November 11, 2014 as a part of Lincoln Historic Site’s Historian-in-Residence program. Sponsored by the Museum of New Mexico Foundation, Mr. Nolan will give a talk on his original research and recent discoveries into the origins of the famed Lincoln County outlaw.
All will be revealed on Tuesday, November 11th at 2:00pm in the San Juan Mission at Lincoln, NM when Frederick Nolan, Susan Stevenson, and Gary Jones, the latter two descendants of Lincoln County pioneers, present their new discoveries into the origins of Billy the Kid. Seating is limited and first come first serve.

Huicholes: The Last Peyote Guardians
This recently-released documentary (120 mins. Spanish/English) tells the story of the Wixarika or Huicholes people - one of the most intact precolonial groups remaining in the Americas - and their struggle against both the Mexican government and the multinational mining corporations to preserve Wirikuta, their sacred lands, against mineral extraction.
This film highlights the global debate pitting ancient cultural values, the exploration of nature, and the inevitable development of the peoples against promises from the multinationals to create jobs and wealth for the people without contamination.
The mining is seen by the Wixarika and their supporters as a menace to the delicate biodiversity of this unique ecosystem, liested by the UNESCO as a World Cultural and Natural Heritage site, and a very real threat to their spiritual traditions and culture.
Please note film director Hernan Vichez will be accompanied by two Huichol Shamans in the film for a Q&A following each session.

New Mexico brewing began in the 1850s with small breweries that were wiped out by Prohibition. Not until 1988 did craft brewers stage a renaissance. Jon C. Stott describes its evolution. Stott is author of New Mexico Beer: A History of Brewing in the Land of Enchantment (History Press, 2014).
