Postcards from the Past: Fred Harvey’s Southwest
New Mexico History Museum
5:30 PM - 6:30 PM
A Free First Friday Gallery Talk

In 1904, Fred Harvey’s eating-house empire joined forces with the Detroit Publishing Company to create hundreds of postcards depicting scenes from the Southwest. With a penny for postage, travelers could send tinted images of the Southwest’s landscape or Native Americans anywhere in the country. The postcards taught America who we are and today are treasured keepsakes – a story told in Telling New Mexico Stories from Then and Now. As part of the museum’s Free First Friday Gallery Talks, Meredith Davidson, curator of 19th- and 20th-century Southwest collections, talks about the postcards’ evolution and inspires visitors to consider messages they’d like to put forth in the new year.

Meet up with friends, learn a little something, and head onto dinner with the money you saved. The talks last 15-20 minutes and are repeated at 5:30 and 6:30 pm. Museum admission is free from 5-8 pm on the first Friday of the month, November through April.

Ranching in the 22nd Century: How We Get from Here to There
New Mexico History Museum
2:00 PM - 3:30 PM
A Cowboys Real and Imagined event

Drought has descended on the Southwest for the last several years, leaving most of New Mexico’s agricultural land in conditions that demand new ways of thinking. Ranches have traditionally been one of the state’s largest industries, and that rainless sky means tough choices for people who juggle land management and environmental change. Many of them are adapting successfully, though, by reevaluating land use in creative ways. Their efforts help keep the legacy of the cowboy alive.

As part of the ongoing exhibit, Cowboys Real and Imagined, join us for a panel discussion on “Ranching in the 22nd Century: How We Get from Here to There,” at 2 pm on Sunday, March 2, in the History Museum Auditorium. Moderated by Courtney White, founder and creative director of the Quivira Coalition, panelists will address the issues facing ranchers in the current drought and the prospect of ranching in the future with a deeper understanding of environmental conditions.

Feasting at the Colonial Palace: History with Dirt on It

A Free First Friday Gallery Talk

Archaeological excavations provide a glimpse of life’s little details seldom recorded in official documents. The bits of bone and burned-plant remains that archaeologists recovered from excavations behind and under the Palace of the Governors show us what kinds of foods people ate over the centuries. Bones and pot sherds tell us how foods were prepared and served. Even the tiniest pottery fragments reveal the networks of trade between Spanish colonists and Pueblo peoples. As part of the museum’s Free First Friday Gallery Talks, Dr. Frances Levine, director of the New Mexico History Museum/Palace of the Governors, takes you on a culinary tour of the Palace.

Meet up with friends, learn a little something, and head onto dinner with the money you saved. The talks last 15-20 minutes and are repeated at 5:30 and 6:30 pm. Museum admission is free from 5-8 pm on the first Friday of the month, November through April.

Friends of Indian Art: The CrazyHorse Silversmithing Legacy
Museum of New Mexico Foundation

Join the Friends of Indian Art (FIA) and renowned Cochiti jeweler Cippy CrazyHorse and son Waddie, a recent Stanford University graduate, as they discuss the influence of Terecita and Joe H. Quintana, the famed master-silversmith parents of the elder CrazyHorse. Now flowing three generations, working with silver runs deep in the roots of the CrazyHorse family. Classic traditional peublo designs carry through in each of the father and son’s respective works as a result of the silversmithing legacy. The jewelry creations of these two artists clearly maintain a distinctive signature style of their own, blending both the past and present in their designs. Learn more here. A special noon lecture and remembrance

After Pancho Villa’s March 9, 1916, attack on Columbus, NM, Gen. John J. Pershing launched a Punitive Expedition with one goal: Get Villa. Given his failure to do so, Pershing’s effort could easily be chalked up as a military failure. But its long-term impact was significant. The surge into Mexico provided valuable training for Pershing and for New Mexico troops who would all too soon enter World War I.

As centenary commemorations for “The Great War” begin across the globe, the History Museum’s interim director, Jon Hunner, will speak on “World War I and New Mexico” at noon on Wednesday, July 30. This free lecture will be in the Meem Community Room; enter through the museum’s Washington Avenue doors.

How did artists in Spain’s farflung colonies draw inspiration for the lavishly detailed artwork on display in Painting the Divine: Images of Mary in the New World? Secular and sacred engravings were sent to New World colonies like Santa Fe, and inventories made in the viceroyalties confirm that these European prints were displayed in churches and private homes. Local artists based their own work on them, helping to create a unique regional aesthetic. Meet curator Josef Díaz in the Painting the Divine gallery, where he will show how the art evolved.

A Palace in Need of Repair: 1660-1720
New Mexico History Museum
6:00 PM - 7:30 PM
The Santa Fe Fiesta Lecture

The Palace of the Governors, begun in 1609, remains the nation’s oldest continuously occupied government building. But before and especially after the 1680 Pueblo Revolt and 1693 Reconquest, one of the most common complaints found in early descriptions of it came down to four important words: “In need of repair.” Over and over, the phrase crops up in the historical record. For the museum’s annual Santa Fe Fiesta Lecture, noted archaeologist Cordelia “Dedie” Thomas Snow pulls together the various citations of that phrase to imagine how the Palace looked and what life in Santa Fe was like.

“A Palace in Need of Repair: 1660-1720” is at 6 pm on Wednesday, Sept. 3, in the History Museum auditorium. Admission is $5 at the door; free to members of the Palace Guard, the museum’s friends’ group. (To join the Palace Guard, call the Museum of New Mexico Foundation at 982-6366, ext. 100.)

From 1839 into the 1860s, people held their loved ones’ images as daguerreotypes or ambrotypes tucked into hinged cases. The cases protected the images from exposure to the ravages of air—but that also bars them from public display. Toxic to produce, they are increasingly difficult to find, but the Palace of the Governors Photo Archives owns several hundred. Join Photo Archivist Daniel Kosharek for "Mirror of Time: Cased Portraits from the Dawn of Photography," as he pulls a few from storage for this special one-time viewing in the museum lobby.

Film Screening with Director
Museum of Indian Arts and Culture
10:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Huicholes: The Last Peyote Guardians

This recently-released documentary (120 mins. Spanish/English) tells the story of the Wixarika or Huicholes people - one of the most intact precolonial groups remaining in the Americas - and their struggle against both the Mexican government and the multinational mining corporations to preserve Wirikuta, their sacred lands, against mineral extraction.

This film highlights the global debate pitting ancient cultural values, the exploration of nature, and the inevitable development of the peoples against promises from the multinationals to create jobs and wealth for the people without contamination.

The mining is seen by the Wixarika and their supporters as a menace to the delicate biodiversity of this unique ecosystem, liested by the UNESCO as a World Cultural and Natural Heritage site, and a very real threat to their spiritual traditions and culture.

Please note film director Hernan Vichez will be accompanied by two Huichol Shamans in the film for a Q&A following each session.

Admission to the film is free with museum admission.
