A Reappraisal of an Eighteenth-century Circular Structure Located North of the Barracks Behind the Palace of the Governors
Office of Archaeological Studies
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
Office of Archaeological Studies and Friends of Archaeology Brown Bag Lecture:

During the 2003 and 2004 excavations in advance of the New Mexico History Museum’s construction, the Office of Archaeological Studies discovered an eighteenth-century circular structure location north of the Spanish presidial barracks behind the Palace of the Governors. Based on the artifacts recovered and features present within the circular structure foundation, it was interpreted as the remains of a carniceria or butcher shop. A recent reappraisal of the structure and its stratigraphy and artifact content has yielded a revised interpretation that enriches and enlivens the history of the structure and social history at the Palace of the Governors in the eighteenth-century.

The Brown Bag talks will take place at the Center for New Mexico Archaeology at 12:00 noon in the CNMA library. Seating is limited. Admission is free.

The Center for New Mexico Archaeology (7 Old Cochiti Road) is located off of Caja del Rio Road, across from Challenge New Mexico on the way to the Santa Fe Municipal Golf Course. Barbara Chatterjee will present a lecture on the terracotta warriors of Qin Shi Huang. The images of the terracotta army standing in trenches near Xi’an, China have traveled around the world many times. However, the recovery work continues, and on this UNESCO World Heritage site, one can see also the loci of continued excavation and restoration of yet more warriors and horses. I will share what I observed looking at the site for clues to the archaeological process.

Archaeology and Language in the Southwest
Office of Archaeological Studies
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
Office of Archaeological Studies and Friends of Archaeology Brown Bag Lecture:

Language is not the most obvious of the data sources available to Southwestern archaeologists. We can’t hear the ancient ones speak, and there is no confident way to confirm (or deny) models of language history. But historical linguistics is relevant to archaeological models of deep culture history, and language is an important part of current controversies in migration studies. Eric Blinman will present an introduction to Southwestern linguistics and a (biased) view of the correlation between Pueblo languages and archaeological models of Pueblo history.

The Brown Bag talks will take place at the Center for New Mexico Archaeology at 12:00 noon in the CNMA library. Seating is limited. Admission is free.

Paleoethnobotany: What We Do and How We Do It
Office of Archaeological Studies
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
Office of Archaeological Studies and Friends of Archaeology Brown Bag Lecture:

Paleoethnobotany can be the least understood and appreciated of the specialist studies within the field of archaeology. This talk will begin with a description of the water separation technique used to retrieve macrobotanical material from soil samples, then a brief description of the most common plants recovered and their uses. Pam will also relate stories of the primary ethnobotanists that collected data on how plants were used, information that paleoethnobotanists still use today to make analogies to infer how people used plants in prehistory.

The Role of Settlement Pattern Studies and the Emergence of the Current Archaeological View of Ancient Maya Civilization
Office of Archaeological Studies
12:00 PM - 12:00 PM
Office of Archaeological Studies and Friends of Archaeology Brown Bag Lecture:

Current scholarly understandings of Pre-Columbian Maya civilization are quite different from the traditional model of ancient Maya civilization that dominated the field of Maya studies until recently and still dominates public perception of the ancient Maya. In part, this new view is due to both the significant increase in archaeological studies in the Maya area in the past few decades and the decipherment of Maya hieroglyphic texts, which have provided new insights into Maya history. Much of the change also is due to the introduction and rapid spread of settlement pattern studies conducted more than a half a century ago. This Brown Bag talk examines the major impact of the methodology of settlement pattern research on Maya archaeology and looks at new directions in the field.

Denise Chávez was born, raised and still lives in Las Cruces, New Mexico, 42 miles from the México Border. If she didn’t live in Cruces, she would live in Española, New Mexico, “Low-Rider Capital of the World,” where she once lived and taught at Northern New Mexico Community College. Other books include Loving Pedro Infante, Face of An Angel and A Taco Testimony: Meditations on Family, Food and Culture, among others. Daniel Zolinsky was born in Paris, France to Franco/Russian parents and learned to take photographs when he arrived in the U.S. at age ten. He considers himself a “Fricano”—A French Chicano. Pueblo Pintado
Office of Archaeological Studies
Friends of Archaeology

This will be a long, one-day Saturday field trip, June 25, touring Pueblo I-era sites in the San Juan Basin with Tom Windes, a retired archaeologist from the National Park Service. We will visit two clusters of sites near Pueblo Pintado and near Chaco Canyon. The sites represent the small settlements that are the 9th and early 10th century hamlets and villages that preceded the monumental construction of great houses in Chaco Canyon. These sites are roughly contemporaneous with some of the sites that will be visited on the Dinetah Labyrinth tour earlier in June, but there are significant differences in their appearance.

We have also reserved a group campground in Chaco for the night of June 25. Interested participants are welcome to stay overnight in the campground and join Eric Blinman for an informal tour of downtown Chaco on Sunday morning. Hiking will not be strenuous but high clearance vehicles are recommended and carpooling is highly encouraged.

Trip cost for both days will be $170/FOA members, $190/non-members.  Cost for first day only $85/members, $95/non-members. Spaces are limited. Make reservations beginning May 31, 2016 at 7:00 am by calling (505) 982-7799, ext. 6.

NOTE:  Those signing up for either of the above field trips should attend Eric Blinman’s P1 Brown Bag talk at noon on Tuesday May 24, or at 7:00PM on Thursday evening May 26, at CNMA.  See nmarchaeology.org for details.

Living with Archaeology in the Tewa Basin or Where did the ancient ones live before the Pajarito Plateau?
Office of Archaeological Studies
Friends of Archaeology

For most of the public, and even for most archaeologists, the story of Northern Rio Grande archaeology begins with Bandelier National Monument and the Coalition period (AD 1175-1300). Well preserved sites on the Pajarito Plateau have attracted attention since the late 19th century due to their visibility, but the sites are almost exclusively post-AD 1175 in age. Earlier sites dating to the AD 900-1175 period are present in the valley bottoms of the Rio Grande and its tributaries, but these early sites are generally hidden and have only rarely been investigated. The valley bottoms were, and are, great places to farm and live, so these ancient sites are now covered by layers of occupation up to and including our modern communities.

This day trip will visit the Wickersham extended family in the vicinity of La Puebla, New Mexico, just north of Santa Fe. After purchasing the property in the mid-20th century, they discovered that many generations had lived there previously, including during the Late Developmental period. This will be a chance for tour participants to see Late Developmental period archaeology in the Northern Rio Grande, to see why archaeologists know so little about this important period in the culture history of the Tewa Basin, and to hear anecdotes of the surprises in store for modern landowners who find themselves only the latest of more than 50 generations of valley citizens.

Trip leaders will be Stephen Post (Deputy Director Emeritus, OAS) and Steven Lakatos (Archaeologist, New Mexico Energy, Minerals, and Natural Resources Department). This trip will have a limited number of participants. Make reservations beginning at 7:00 am on Tuesday, June 7, 2016 by calling (505) 982-7799, ext. 7. Difficulty: Moderate with moderate to strenuous hiking. Cost to FOA members/$85, non-FOA members/$95.

A second site will be selected to complement the visit to the Wickersham site in Puebla.  Please check back on nmarchaeology.org and the Museum of New Mexico Foundation’s Friends of Archaeology website for updates.

La Bajada Pueblos and Environs
Office of Archaeological Studies
Friends of Archaeology

La Bajada Pueblo, a Rio Grande Classic period site, was occupied from the A.D. 1200’s up to A.D. 1700 (dates obtained in 2008 by BLM archeologist Peter McKenna). Both Cochiti and Santo Domingo Pueblos trace ancestry to this site.  The only excavation of La Bajada Pueblo was in 1915, when Nels Nelson excavated about 10% of the site.  Interestingly, this large (3-5 roomblock) and important site has not previously been toured by an archeological group.

Our 5-7 hour tour, led by NFS archaeologist Mike Bremer, will visit the pueblo and proximate field and water diversion features.  The tour will focus on two overlook sites on the mesa which have considerable rock art, a well preserved shrine, and some quite distinctive room features.

This trip is rated easy. Trip cost will be $85 for FOA members ($95 for non -members). Spaces are limited. Make reservations beginning August 9, 2016 at 7:00 am by calling (505) 982-7799, ext. 5.

John Andrews: Making Sure No Wool Was Pulled Over His Eyes
Museum of Indian Arts and Culture
Friends of Indian Art

John Andrews, owner of Native Jackets, will speak to us about the development of his business which began on the web in 1998 selling Indian blanket jackets. After meeting Mark Winter of Toadlena Trading Post, he saw that he could trust his eye and started investing more in Navajo rugs, Pueblo pottery, and Native baskets. Now native art sales exceed the jacket sales, and have for several years. John will show us beautiful tapestry weavings made by living master weavers, antique treasures, and Pendleton blankets.

The Casas Grandes world
Office of Archaeological Studies
Friends of Archaeology

Come join us for a visit to the ancient town of Paquimé, heart of the Casas Grandes world.

This unique center displays many elements associated with Mesoamerican societies to the south—ball courts, public platform mounds, effigy mounds, an advanced water delivery system, macaw breeding and a beautiful museum.

A visit to Mata Ortiz, the famous pottery-making village is also on the itinerary. Home of famed potter, Juan Quezada, the village has become a vibrant center of beautiful pottery production. Based on ancient Casas Grandes designs, today’s potters have taken design to a new level of sophistication.

Archaeologist Rafael Cruz, of Mexico’s Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia, will join us for visits to other backcountry sites, ball courts, and rock art panels.

A new road into the Sierra Madre Occidental will also allow us to travel to the famous La Cueva de la Olla. Formerly, a bone-jarring ride of three hours, the new road should make the trip much more enjoyable.

The trip will be self-motored and we will caravan from Santa Fe to Nuevo Casas Grandes; a trip of 8-10 hours depending upon time needed to cross the border into Mexico. That includes time for a lunch break.

We will stay at the Hotel Hacienda in Nuevo Casas Grandes, which has a restaurant and a pool.

Group size is limited to 20 people.

A valid passport is required for this trip!

You will also need to purchase Mexican car insurance. Mexican law does not allow coverage with a U.S. insurance company. We will supply names of vendors who offer reasonable policies and prices.

We will be traveling backroads, so a high clearance vehicle is needed. Four-wheel drive is not necessary, just good clearance. We will compress ourselves into as few cars as possible for going into the backcountry.

A visit to La Cueva de la Olla requires a brief ascent of perhaps 50 feet. It is not particularly difficult, but footing can be slippery. There is no trail. Persons with physical disabilities may not be able to make the ascent.

Price for the excursion will be $300.00/FOA members, $375.00/non-members.

If you are interested in the trip, please sign up and we will contact you by email about hotel pricing and other details.  Please call the FOA Hotline starting 7:00am on Tuesday July 12 at 505-982-7799 x6

Nick Rosetta Stone and Shell Jewelry demonstration
Museum of Indian Arts and Culture
10:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Using all natural material and handmade processes, he makes beautiful heishi necklaces.

Nick learned the art from his parents, Ray and Mary Rosetta. The heishi artform goes back to ancestral pueblo times, long before the arrival of the Spanish in the Southwest, when Kewa stone and shell jewelry - believed by many archeologists to be the oldest form of jewelry in the southwest-was highly prized and widely traded.

Nick does most of the lapidary work--cutting, grinding, sanding and polishing. His wife Me-Wee does ninety-five percent of the stringing. He obtains his materials from many different places--turquoise from Nevada and Arizona, serpentine from South Dakota, pipestone from Minnesota, as well as stones from Canada, Peru and Australia.

Demonstrations of his work will be on September 22, 28, and 29th from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm each day.

The Food Sovereignty Project

In partnership with the National Museum of the American Indian, Washington, D.C., the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture (MIAC) is presenting the two-day event, The Food Sovereignty Project, followed by a Community wide celebration on Museum Hill, focusing on how New Mexico tribes are reincorporating traditional foods into their diets to foster greater health and wellness in their communities. The Food Sovereignty symposium brings together a diverse range of indigenous farmers, herders, and hunters, who have been able to successfully sustain and revitalize food production practices that are vital to traditional life. Also included are tribal program directors and educators who have initiated successful community-based traditional food programs. Food sovereignty efforts are part of a larger national movement of indigenous peoples to create sustainable forms of food production that are Native American driven.

For complete symposium schedule and information to register, please call the front desk at 505-476-1269.

Drawing the Line: The Early Work of Agnes Martin
New Mexico History Museum
5:30 PM - 6:30 PM
A free “First Friday” lecture

Albuquerque author Christina Rosenberger will speak about artist Agnes Martin (1912-2004), an iconic figure in 20th century art with a continuing artistic legacy in New Mexico.

Canadian born, Martin started to make a name for herself in the New York art scene in the late 1950s and early 1960s, but in 1967, abandoned her career for a reclusive life in the New Mexico desert. She did not return to her work for nearly a decade. Rosenberger’s talk focuses on Martin’s formative years in New Mexico and the decisive impact New Mexico had on Martin’s iconic grid paintings in the early 1960s.

Rosenberger’s new book, Drawing the Line: The Early Work of Agnes Martin (University of California Press, 2016), explores how the rapidly evolving creative processes and pictorial solutions Martin developed between 1940 and 1967 define all her subsequent art. It also traces New Mexico’s role as a vibrant creative center in the middle of the 20th century, tracing the networks of art, artists, and information that moved between New Mexico, New York, and California in the postwar period.

This festive and informative event provides a rare opportunity for the public to learn about how New Mexico’s first inhabitants lived, their not-so-primitive technologies, and some of the interesting archaeological digs underway in New Mexico. The party benefits the FOA, a volunteer organization that was created by the Museum of New Mexico Foundation in 1991 to support ongoing research and education projects at the Museum of New Mexico’s Office of Archaeological Studies (OAS).
