MIAC Curators Examine Your Treasures

During this time, curators from The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture and The Laboratory of Anthropology are in the lobby of MIAC to look at your treasures. These curators will attempt to identify and explain any artifact or historic object presented to them. They prefer to work with objects from the Southwest but are willing to take a look at anything that is brought in. If they can not identify an object an attempt will be made to find someone who can. Sometimes, the discussion among the curators may become as much or more informative than the identification of the artifact.

Curators cannot appraise any items but can refer you to resources that will.

Museum of Indian Arts and Culture
10:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Community Day to Contribute to Artist’s Installation

Join us on Saturday, February 24 for a day of making beads with Cannupa Hanska Luger. Drop in and make a few beads to represent a handful of indigenous individuals lost to violence.

For the most complete information - including video - on Luger’s proejct, visit http://www.cannupahanska.com/mmiwqtbeadproject

Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, Queer and Trans People BEAD PROJECT:

2” beads made from clay, unfired are requested from our communities to complete a monumental beaded portrait which will be created by artist Cannupa Hanska Luger from a photograph taken by First Nations photographer Kali Spitzer. This collaboration with community acknowledges our Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, Queer and Trans people. In Canada alone, the number of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women was at 4,000 in 2016 as noted in research gathered by the Native Women’s Association of Canada.

We are aware that the narrative of MMIWQT expands beyond a specific region, and by starting here, with acknowledging this number and this place for this specific portrait and creating collectively, we can move forward and continue to address MMIWQT in all of our respective homelands. This community engagement is meant to activate our processing of Missing and Murdered Indigenous People through the action of doing and feeling in a collective effort to say ‘this is enough’.

As you create, we ask you to hold awareness that each one of these beads represents an individual from our Indigenous communities that we have lost.

12:00 PM - 2:00 PM
MIAC Cutaors Examine Your Treasures

During this time, curators from The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture and The Laboratory of Anthropology are in the lobby of MIAC to look at your treasures. These curators will attempt to identify and explain any artifact or historic object presented to them. They prefer to work with objects from the Southwest but are willing to take a look at anything that is brought in. If they can not identify an object an attempt will be made to find someone who can. Sometimes, the discussion among the curators may become as much or more informative than the identification of the artifact.

Curators cannot appraise any items but can refer you to resources that will.

Most of all, it is a tribute to the dancers of Albuquerque—to each and every one who has buoyed this ship for the past 25 years and helped to put Albuquerque on the salsa map.

MIAC Curators Examine Your Treasures

Curators from The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture and The Laboratory of Anthropology gather in lobby of MIAC to look at your treasures. They attempt to identify and explain any artifact or historic object presented to them. They prefer to work with objects from the Southwest but are willing to take a look at anything that is brought in. If they can not identify an object an attempt will be made to find someone who can. Sometimes, the discussion among the curators may become as much - or more informative - than the identification of the artifact.

Curators cannot appraise any items but can refer you to resources that will.

Spanish Colonial Women and the Law: Complaints, Lawsuits and Criminal Behavior

Speaker: Dr. Linda Tigges, Author, and retired City of Santa Fe land planner.

Women in early eighteenth century Spanish Colonial New Mexico had rights and privileges that were not enjoyed by other women in North America until the late nineteenth century. Under Spanish law women were considered separate entities and valuable members of Spanish society. Dr. Tigges’s lecture will show that they could own property, inherit in their own name, and act as court witnesses. In particular, they could make accusations and denunciations to the local alcalde mayor and governor, which they frequently did.  In doing so, these Spanish colonial women provided an important legacy for future generations.

First Friday Fractals- September
New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science
5:30 PM - 9:00 PM

A fractal is a never-ending pattern. Fractals are infinitely complex patterns that are self-similar across different scales. They are created by repeating a simple process over and over in an ongoing feedback loop. Driven by recursion, fractals are images of dynamic systems – the pictures of Chaos. Geometrically, they exist in between our familiar dimensions. Fractal patterns are extremely familiar, since nature is full of fractals. For instance: trees, rivers, coastlines, mountains, clouds, seashells, hurricanes, etc. Abstract fractals – such as the Mandelbrot Set – can be generated by a computer calculating a simple equation over and over.

Pueblo Pottery Demonstration
Museum of Indian Arts and Culture
1:00 PM - 4:00 PM
with Gabriel Paloma (Zuni)

Our popular Pueblo Pottery Series continues with Gabriel Paloma (Zuni). Pueblo Pottery demos take place in the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture’s Buchsbaum Pottery Gallery. Don’t forget Wednesdays are free for seniors! Read below for more information on Mr. Paloma.

Gabriel Paloma was born in Zuni, NM back in 1966. Having grown up on the Zuni reservation close to the area known as the “Halona:we (Middle Place)” throughout his life, Gabriel has always been fascinated by images and how the Zuni World is represented now and back in time through the eyes of his elders. Naturally, he was drawn into automotive but the interest in clay was cultivated during his teenage years when he took art and pottery classes in high school.

After completing his high school journey and graduated, Gabriel went to UNM Albuquerque to take college courses. The university was a huge setting and Gabriel took on the advantage of being close to home and headed back to the reservation to enroll at UNM Gallup to further his art education.

Gabriel is drawn into practice of studying old Zuni pottery and its designs which is fascinating to see how the A: shiwi people endured this art since in time memorial. This ancient art is a collaboration between the artist and the native land of how the earthly materials are utilized to produce his pottery today. Gabriel cherishes this connection with nature and who taught him how to create pottery. He feels that the artistic talent is exchange between mother earth and the artist opens up many opportunities.

Currently, Gabriel is a pottery teacher at Zuni High School specializing in the Fine Arts Department. He teaches 15-18 year-olds in pottery and ceramics to help them nurture the same enthusiasm that he had when he took art classes. He is also teaching at an alternative high school in Zuni to pursue the same ecstatic love of pottery making with young adults.

Gabriel was introduced to his first ever West Valley Native American Arts Festival as a professional potter at Litchfield Park in Phoenix, AZ. (1998) and in 2004 he was selected as one of the SWAIA FELLOWSHIP AWARD artist in Santa Fe, NM.   In 2018, he has been earning recognition and still building customer cliental at the same time improving on his elaborate Zuni style pottery.

From Silver Bullet’s Website: Since the beginning of time, Native American Warriors have navigated a unique cultural and spiritual path, relying on the tenets of the Warrior in ancient and modern warfare. The lessons of the Warrior are universal; the spirit of the Warrior survives, even in the face of conflict.

With a focus on the spiritual and historic journey of Native American Warriors, Silver Bullet Productions will present the story of the Warrior, the importance of cultures in modern quests, and the lessons of War through the lens of these cultures. The characters will be elders and historians from New Mexican tribes and Native veterans of World War II, and the Korean, Vietnam and Afghanistan/Iraq conflicts. Grounded in research and guided by voices of men and women in our armed forces, the documentary will reveal the distinct motive, preparation, conflict, and healing of tribal soldiers.

Pueblo Pottery Demonstration
Museum of Indian Arts and Culture
1:00 PM - 4:00 PM
with Michael Kanteena (Laguna Pueblo)

Our popular Pueblo Pottery Series continues with Michael Kanteena (Laguna Pueblo). Pueblo Pottery demos take place in the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture’s Buchsbaum Pottery Gallery. Don’t forget Wednesdays are free for seniors! Read below for more information on Mr. Kanteena.

"Remembering the beautiful pot shards he had picked up as a boy, and wishing to learn about his ancient roots, which he knew went back to New Mexico’s Chaco Canyon (the Anasazi Culture), Michael began collecting archeological catalogues of pottery forms.

Through extensive study, trial and error, and even consultation with archaeologists, he developed his pottery into remarkably close reproductions of Chacoan and Mesa Verde pottery.

Recently, his studies have expanded to the Mimbres and ancient Mexican People, where human and animal effigies are common. Michael has added his own contemporary designs to these ancient themes, to develop his own unique art form.

A single effigy may be based on a Toltec theme, painted with Chacoan designs, and put together in contemporary form.

Various feature articles have been written about Michael and his unique style of pottery making. These include the Gallup Independent newspaper. Native Peoples Magazine, and the Southwest Art Magazine."

Curators Examine Your Treasures

Curators from The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture and The Laboratory of Anthropology gather in lobby of MIAC to look at your treasures. They attempt to identify and explain any artifact or historic object presented to them. They prefer to work with objects from the Southwest but are willing to take a look at anything that is brought in. If they can not identify an object an attempt will be made to find someone who can. Sometimes, the discussion among the curators may become as much - or more informative - than the identification of the artifact.

Curators cannot appraise any items but can refer you to resources that will.
