Illusions of Empire: The Civil War and Reconstruction in the U.S.-Mexico Borderlands

Please join William “Billy” Kiser, Ph.D, Associate Professor of History, Department Chair, Texas A&M University—San Antonio, for an ONLINE presentaion as part of our Friends of History lecture series.

During the Civil War, Mexico’s North overlapped with the U.S. Southwest in the context of diplomacy and military operations.  A disparate group of historical actors vied for power and control along the U.S.-Mexico border: Union and Confederate army officers and political leaders, regional Indian tribes, diplomatic agents, and territorial officials. Their unconventional approaches to foreign relations demonstrate the complex ways that individuals influence the course of global affairs and reveal that borderlands simultaneously enable and stifle the growth of empires.

Billy Kiser is originally from Las Cruces and graduated from New Mexico State University before going on to earn his doctorate in history at Arizona State University in 2016.  He is currently an associate professor at Texas A&M University-San Antonio.  He is the author of five books on nineteenth-century New Mexico history:  Turmoil on the Rio Grande (2011); Dragoons in Apacheland (2013); Borderlands of Slavery (2017); Coast-to-Coast Empire (2019); and Illusions of Empire (2021).  His next book, to be published by Yale University Press, examines Indian scalp bounties and “scalp warfare” across the North American frontiers from the 1600s to the 1800s.

This presentation is drawn from Dr. Kiser’s most recent publication, Illusions of Empire: The Civil War and Reconstruction in the U.S.-Mexico Borderlands (2021).  It is available from the University of Pennsylvania Press (pennpress.org) or through your local bookshop ((bookshop, org).

Friends of Folk Art present The Parka Imperative with Suzi Jones.
Museum of International Folk Art
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

FOFA, Lecture, members only

Please join us on Sunday, January 14, 2024, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. to explore the cultural dimensions of parkas and parka making and their role in cultural survival with Suzi Jones. The title of the parka exhibition now at the Museum of International Folk Art, Ghúunayúkata -- To Keep Them Warm: The Alaska Native Parka, suggests the truly significant role of parkas in Indigenous Alaska life for thousands of years. Parkas, indeed, have kept people warm, dry, and alive. Yet, in our times, when manufactured clothing is readily available from local stores and from thousands of online retailers, one might wonder why many Indigenous people of Alaska and the Far North persist in making traditional parkas from the pelts of locally harvested animals, fashioning them in regional styles, using centuries’ old designs that often require hundreds of hours of sewing by hand.

Bridge Building with Paper & Paste Across Generations
Museum of International Folk Art
2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Multi media artist Cal Duran will speak about the process, the vitality, and storytelling of paper and paste examining the many layers, time, imagination, and heart that go into the art of papier mâché.

As a Colorado native, Cal was introduced to papier mâché by his grandmother, discovering the adaptability and storytelling of this ancient art form.  Self-taught with the guidance of many community artists and leaders he began his journey building ofrendas at the Pirate Art Gallery during the early years of Dia de Los Muertos celebrations in the Denver community. Using papier mâché, clay, and mixed media, he has been invited to create hundreds of Día de los Muertos installations throughout Colorado, including the Denver Art Museum, Colorado History Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, the Denver Zoo, galleries, and other institutions.  He has a permanent room installation at Meow Wolf Denver honoring the animals, ancestors, and the land.  Collaborating with communities, youth, and elders, Cal has witnessed the magic of paper & paste as a medium that builds bridgesacross generations, and into communities.

ASL Interpretation is provided for this event.

Crosses of Iron: The Tragic Story of Dawson, New Mexico, and Its Twin Mining Disasters

Please join Nick Pappas, for an ON-LINE historic talk related to the tragic mining events in Dawson, New Mexico, as part of our Friends of History lecture series.

In October 1913, 261 miners and two rescuers died when a massive explosion ripped through a mine operated by Phelps, Dodge & Company in Dawson, New Mexico. Ten years later, a second blast claimed the lives of another 120 miners. Today, all that remains is a cemetery marked by a sea of white iron crosses memorializing the nearly four hundred miners killed in the two explosions — and a vibrant community that still gathers by the hundreds every other Labor Day weekend for a picnic reunion on the old townsite, long after the town was no more. Nick Pappas will present the history of these events, of the rise and decline of the mining town of Dawson, and of the strong bond of former residents and families of Dawson that remains to this day.

Nick Pappas worked for four decades in the newspaper industry, most recently as an editor at the Albuquerque Journal. He has written news stories, columns and award-winning editorials, as well as freelance articles for magazines. Prior to the Albuquerque Journal, Nick spent nearly 24 years at The Telegraph of Nashua, New Hampshire, where he served at different times as business editor, city editor, managing editor, editor-in-chief and editorial page editor. He was named an editorial writer of the year by the New England Newspaper and Press Association in 2009 and 2011, and he was recognized by the New Hampshire Press Association with its Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011. A native of Lowell, Massachusetts, Nick now lives with his wife, Susan, in Albuquerque.

Friends of Folk Art present Rapa Nui – an In-Depth Tour of Easter Island with Ken Collins.
Museum of International Folk Art
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

FOFA, Lecture, members only

Please join us on Sunday, February 11, 2024, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. to explore the mysteries and theories surrounding the ruins left behind by ancestors of the Rapa Nuians. Ken Collins will focus on a visit he made to Rapa Nui (Easter Island) in 2019. This involved a detailed exploration of sites on the island led by a local couple. The husband being Rapa Nuian and the wife, an American ex-pat whose grandfather was perhaps the most famous non-native archeologist to explore the ruins left behind by ancestors of the present-day native people. There are many theories about why the sites were abandoned, but increasingly, a clearer picture is coming into focus. The presentation will include natural features, the moai (statues) at various sites and the fascinating quarry where the stone was excavated and carved.

This event is for FOFA members ONLY.  FOFA members will receive an invitation by email which will include all the details. A single membership allows access to one ticket. A dual membership allows for two tickets.

The Only Wonderful Things: The Creative Partnership of Willa Cather and Edith Lewis

Please join Melissa J. Homestead, Professor, English, Program Faculty in Women’s and Gender Studies, University of Nebraska--Lincoln, as she gives an ON-LINE talk as part of our Friends of History Lecture Series.

Willa Cather and Edith Lewis lived together in New York City for nearly forty years. This lecture will give an overview of their personal and creative partnership as recovered in The Only Wonderful Things: The Creative Partnership of Willa Cather and Edith Lewis (Oxford University Press 2021) and will also give special attention to their shared travels in the American Southwest that inspired Cather’s novels The Professor’s House (1925) and Death Comes for the Archbishop

Dr. Melissa J. Homestead is professor of English and Program Faculty in Women’s and Gender Studies, where she also directs the Cather Project, co-edits The Complete Letters of Willa Cather, and co-directs A Digital Library of Willa Cather’s Literary Manuscripts. Dr. Glassie shares a long history with the Museum of International Folk Art and has worked on multiple projects over the years, including authoring "The Spirit of Folk Art" and curating a major exhibition of Turkish Folk Art in 1991

From Director Pat Collins, ‘Field Work’, is a portrait of the celebrated folklorist and ethnologist Henry Glassie and is an immersive and meditative film set among the rituals and rhythms of working artists in Brazil, Turkey, North Carolina and Ireland. The film displays the director’s trademark eye for details and the process of the artist’s work is awe-inspiring. Glassie’s subject is folklore and art but his deep abiding love for the people who create it resonates throughout the film. “I don’t study people” Glassie says, “I stand with people and I study the things they create.” Artists like the sculptor Edival Rosas from Salvador in Brazil describe their practice as one where body and spirit are integrated, where in Glassie’s words the creative act brings “a momentary fulfilment of what it is to be human.”

ASL interpretation is available by request. Please e-mail Patricia Sigala by March 13th at: patricia.sigala@dca.nm.gov

"Slow Travel New Mexico: Unforgettable Personal Experiences in the Land of Enchantment" by Judith Fein
Museum of International Folk Art
1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Award-winning travel journalists and Santa Fe residents Judith Fein and Paul J. Ross invite you to experience New Mexico in a completely different way. Their new book, Slow Travel, reveals the secret to opening doors, meeting people, participating in surprising events, experiencing joy, and making each trip — no matter how short or long — deeper, richer, and an adventure that is uniquely yours.

Crisscrossing New Mexico, Judith and Paul present unforgettable adventures readers can personally experience, such as painting with an abstract artist on the Navajo Reservation, visiting a wolf refuge, cruising in a lowrider, hiking in a volcano, gourmet dining at Zuni Pueblo, seeing a ghost, tracking the true Billy the Kid . . . and so much more.

MEET SOME OF THE STARS of Slow Travel New Mexico at a celebration Saturday, March 16, 1 pm — 3 pm at the Museum of International Folk Art auditorium. Judith and Paul will engage and delight as they illuminate how to show up in a place and let it reveal itself to you — on its own terms. It’s not about going off the beaten path. It’s about going off the beaten mental path by learning to look, see, open up, and explore differently. It’s a guide to unforgettable experiences.

"Folk Art: Continuity and Creativity" with Pravina Shukla and "The Global Sweep of Folk Art in Clay" with Henry Glassie
Museum of International Folk Art
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Join us for two talks on Folk Art by two Folk Art Scholars and co-authors of Folk Art: Continuity, Creativity, and the Brazilian Quotidian. A book signing with the authors will follow their talks.

FREE with Museum admission. Reserve Seats Here

Dr. Henry Glassie, College Professor Emeritus at Indiana University, has written twenty books, based on fieldwork in the United States, Ireland, Turkey, Bangladesh, Nigeria, and Brazil. Three of his books, Passing the Time in Ballymenone, The Spirit of Folk Art, and Turkish Traditional Art Today, were named among the notable books of the year by the New York Times. The film by Pat Collins, Henry Glassie: Field Work, was named the best Irish documentary of the year in 2020.  Dr. Glassie also curated  a major exhibition for MOIFA of Turkish Folk Art in 1991.

Dr. Pravina Shukla, Provost Professor, has won six teaching awards including the President’s Award for Distinguished Teaching. She is the author of The Grace of Four Moons: Dress, Adornment, and the Art of the Body in Modern India, winner of the Coomaraswamy Prize of the Association of Asian Studies and the Davenport Award of the Costume Society of America. She also wrote Costume: Performing Identities through Dress and co-authored The Individual and Tradition.

Folk Art: Continuity, Creativity, and the Brazilian Quotidian (Indiana University Press, 2023) Book Description: Listen to the artists of the Brazilian Northeast. Their work, they say, comes of continuity and creativity. Continuity runs along lines of learning toward social coherence. Creativity brings challenges and deep personal satisfaction.

What they say and do in Brazil aligns with ethnographic evidence from New Mexico and North Carolina; from Ireland, Portugal, and Italy; from Nigeria, Turkey, India, and Bangladesh; from China and Japan.

This book is about that, about folk art as a sign of human unity.

ASL Interpretation is provided for this event.

Call for Zozobra Memories and Objects
New Mexico History Museum
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Call for Zozobra Memories and Objects for Community Exhibition at New Mexico History Museum

The tradition of Zozobra turns 100 this August and New Mexico History Museum (NMHM) is telling this ten-decade story in the recently reopened Palace of the Governors. The Museum needs community help to bring this history to life.

What: Old Man Gloom’s demise has been one of Santa Fe’s most iconic celebrations since its inception in 1924, offering an annual opportunity for emotional and spiritual cleansing through the torching of worries. The Museum wants to see the community’s favorite Zozobra memories to consider for inclusion in this exhibition. Whether in the form of vintage merch, goofy family movies or sentimental elementary school sculpture, the Museum wants to see it all. Community members can bring their materials directly to NMHM on Lincoln Street to have them examined and photographed on-site. Objects that are chosen for the exhibition will be on loan to NMHM for the duration of the exhibition.

Who: New Mexico History Museum and Kiwanis Club of Santa Fe

Where: New Mexico History Museum, 113 Lincoln Ave., Santa Fe, NM 87501

When: Drop-in hours at NMHM:

Saturday, March 30, 2 – 4 p.m.

Monday, April 1, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Can’t make it to the drop-in session? Submit your entry online at https://burnzozobra.com/lend/.

Why: The involvement and participation of the community is the true igniting force behind Zozobra’s repeated defeat, and we can’t think of anything else better to honor this vital, cathartic tradition than to highlight the faces and objects of those who make this performance possible. Questions? E-mail DCA-HistoryCollections@state.nm.us directly.

12:00 PM - 2:00 PM
Every Third Wednesday of the Month.

Let’s Take a Look takes place the third Wednesday of each month from 12:00 to 2:00 pm. During this time, curators from The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture and The Laboratory of Anthropology are in the lobby of MIAC to look at your treasures. The curators will attempt to identify and explain any artifact or historic object presented to them. They prefer to work with objects from the Southwest but are willing to take a look at anything that is brought in. If they cannot identify an object an attempt will be made to find someone who can. Sometimes, the discussion among the curators may become as much or more informative than the identification of the artifact.

The event is always FREE and open to the public, but please note Federal and State regulations prohibit  the monetary appraisal of objects.

Friends of History First Wednesday Lecture Series Seed to Plate, Soil to Sky: The History of Eight Plants Native Peoples shared with the World.

Please join Lois Ellen Frank, Ph.D., Chef; Native Foods Historian, and Walter Whitewater (Dine) Chef, for an ONLINE discussion of the story of eight plants introduced to the world by Native peoples.

Seed to Plate, Soil to Sky is the story of eight plants that Native peoples gave to the world: corn, beans, squash, chiles, tomatoes, potatoes, vanilla, and cacao. Prior to 1492, these plants only existed in the Americas. Once these plants were introduced to cultures of the world outside of the Americas these cuisines were changed forever This is the story of the history of these plants in Native American cuisine.

Lois Ellen Frank, Ph.D., is a Santa Fe, New Mexico-based Chef, author, a Native foods historian, culinary anthropologist, educator, photographer, organic gardener, and a James Beard Award winning cookbook author, for her book Foods of the Southwest Indian Nations. She is the chef/owner of Red Mesa Cuisine, LLC (), a catering company specializing in Indigenous Cuisine and Cultural Education with a modern twist where she cooks alongside Native American Chef Walter Whitewater, Diné (Navajo). Dr. Frank has spent over 30 years documenting and working with the foods and lifeways of Native American communities in the Southwest. In 2020, she was the recipient of the Local Hero Olla Award, which recognizes an exceptional individual for the work they do to create healthy, innovative, vibrant, and resilient local sustainable food systems in New Mexico.

Walter Whitewater (Diné/Navajo), is a Native American chef, specializing in Indigenous Cuisine and Cultural Education using ancestral foods with a modern twist. He worked on the James Beard Award winning cookbook, Foods of the Southwest Indian Nations with Chef Lois Ellen Frank, Ph.D. and has traveled with Chef Frank, as part of the U.S. State Department and Consulate General’s Culinary Diplomacy Program to Ukraine (2013), the United Kingdom (2105) and Russia (2016) where the two chefs promoted indigenous foods of the Americas through the culinary arts.  He was one of the first Native American chefs to cook at the James Beard House in New York City and won the James Lewis Award in 2008 from BCA Global for his work as a Native chef.
