McWilliams is the author of New Mexico: A Glimpse into an Enchanted Land (Inkwell productions, 2014). He retired to Santa Fe from the computer industry in 2007. Lozen, ca. 1840 – 1890, was a sister of Victorio and fought alongside both Nana and Geronimo.

Erin Fehr (Yup’ik) presents an illustrated lecture drawn from the Hirschfelder-Molin Native American Stereotypes Collection at the Sequoyah National Research Center at the University of Arkansas, Little Rock.
"Noble Savages, Indian Princesses, Drunken Indians and Vanishing Americans: Resources for Countering Stereotypes and Prejudices," a lecture Fehr first delivered at the 2014 annual meeting of the Association of Tribal Archives, Libraries, and Museums, presents and examines just a few dozen of the 1500 objects collected over 40 years by scholars Arlene Hirschfelder, who worked at the Association on American Indian Affairs for 20+ years, and Paulette Fairbanks Molin (White Earth Ojibwe), the former director of American Indian Educational Opportunity Program at Hampton University.

A special program for people with memory illnesses and their loved ones
The nationally acclaimed Alzheimer’s Poetry Project and a growing consortium of Santa Fe-based arts and cultural institutions are joining forces to help people living with memory loss, along with their care partners, friends and the public. Each month, the Community-in-Residence program will open the doors at a different institution for an hour-long session of creativity, playfulness and learning. The program launches on Wednesday, Feb. 25, 9 to 10 am, at the George O’Keeffe Museum, and moves to the Museum of International Folk Art on Tuesday, March 24, at 10:30 am. Future events will be announced soon. A highlight of the event will be the creation of a new poem set to music inspired by the artwork of Georgia O’Keeffe. The Development of Native American Easel Art in New Mexico just opened at the Coronado Historic Site and runs through February 2016. Featured are {how many?} prints of original water color paintings lent by the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture’s Dorothy Dunn Collection.
Among the artists on view are Vidal Casiquito, Jr. of Jemez, Gilbert Atencio of San Ildefonso, and Pablita Velarde of Santa Clara, as well as several pieces by Zia artist, Velino Shije Herrera, who in the early 1930s painted the murals in the reconstructed Kiva at the Coronado Site. Pueblo lifeways is the exhibition’s theme.

His knowledge also extends to the Apache tribes of the White Mountain, and Mescalero. Whether they be songs or stories, they are deeply rooted.

Join us as we screen a brief film (~20 mins) about the incredible journey local sculptor Roxanne Swentzell and her friends took as they aspired to eat only traditional Pueblo food for more than a month. The results? Outstanding. People lost weight, their sugar levels decreased, and other health benefits emerged -- all from instituting a "pre-contact" period diet.
Roxanne will bring six of her friends who participated in the "experience" to answer questions about their dietary and cultural journey from the beginning from the audience.

Sweet Georgia Brown, a film about African American women in World War II

In war and in peacetime, in theaters of conflict and on the homefront, American women have participated in our nation’s defense. Until recent years, those contributions have failed to attract much notice. Even less understood: the contributions of African American women, who had to fight just for the right to serve.
On Sunday, March 29, at 2 pm in the History Museum auditorium, see the New Mexico premiere of Sweet Georgia Brown: Impact, Courage, Sacrifice and Will, a documentary by Lawrence E. Walker of PureHistory Films. A celebration of National Women’s History Month, the event will include remarks by Walker; Marilyn Dykman, a retired Coast Guard officer and the first female Hispanic aviator in Coast Guard history; and Lt. Col. Pam Gaston, representing Women Veterans of New Mexico, a nonprofit organization providing support services.

Traditional Pots and Provocations; provocative program on pottery

The Museum of International Folk Art presents a dialogue on Southern pottery featuring leading ceramic writer and commentator Garth Clark and prominent North Carolina potters Mark Hewitt and Matt Jones. This is not the first time Clark, Hewitt, and Jones have taken the stage together to debate the present and future of North Carolina pottery. This event, titled Traditional Pots and Provocations, is the latest chapter of an ongoing discussion that began as a blog scuffle between Jones and Clark in 2011 and continued as a symposium at the Mint Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 2012. Traditional Pots and Provocations will take place on Sunday, April 19, 2015, 2-4 pm, in the Kathryn O’Keeffe Theater of the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture. The program is in conjunction with the museum’s current exhibition Pottery of the U.S. South: A Living Tradition. The program is by museum admission. New Mexico residents with ID are free on Sundays.

Toxic Secrets of the Lusitania and the Estonia

The remains of the Lusitania and many of its passengers constitute the most famous shipwreck lying on the Irish seabed, and the story of the disaster continues to fascinate. On the 100th anniversary of its sinking, a number of memorial and commemorative events are scheduled in Ireland and the United States. The Friends of the Santa Fe Public Libraries are proud to participate in the commemorations by sponsoring a lecture with the History Museum. At 2 pm on Sunday, May 24, in the museum auditorium, Gregg Bemis, who has a long association and involvement with the story of the Lusitania and the more recent tragedy of the Estonia, speaks on “`Toxic Secrets’ of the Lusitania ad the Estonia.” Best-selling author Hampton Sides will introduce him.

Celebrating 75 years: May 29, 1940 to May 30, 2015
On Saturday, May 30 from 1 to 5pm, Coronado Historic Site celebrates its 75th anniversary, but the site’s importance originates two millennia ago when people were living and farming in the vicinity.
This free, family-friendly celebration looks to the future and honors the site’s storied past. Reenactments, guided tours, music, refreshments, a display of classic Model "A" Fords, and a very special cake prepared by the Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort & Spa’s award-winning pastry chef are just a few things that visitors will enjoy. And those attending this 75th celebratory event will also view the re-opened Kuaua Mural Gallery—at 500 years old the only kiva murals on public display with permission of their cultural stakeholders (Santa Ana, Sandia, Isleta, and Taos Pueblos)—as well as two new exhibitions, the Good Earth and The Development of Native American Easel Art in New Mexico: The Dorothy Dunn Collection on loan from the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture.
Making a special appearance will be Albuquerque’s own award-winning slam poet Carlos Contreras, who will recite It Used to be a Village— a moving reflection of his personal experience of Coronado Historic Site.

Back by popular demand, one of the History Museum’s favorite groups, Schola Cantorum Santa Fe, performs "Echoes of Mary," seldom-heard sacred music dedicated to Mary from the cathedrals of Mexico City and Cuba to the capillas of northern New Mexico. CANCELED: Take a weeklong trip to action-packed 1863 at the New Mexico History Museum’s summer camp, Time Trekkers. Children 9-11 will enjoy VIP access to the museum and get daily doses of hands-on learning—braiding horsehair bracelets, gathering a picnic lunch at the Santa Fe Farmers Market, practicing calligraphy, roping a calf dummy, hand-stitching their own book, playing old-time games and more. Make new friends, strengthen literacy skills, explore different kinds of artwork and learn how history connects the past to the present.
Time Trekkers takes place 10 am–4 pm, Monday–Friday, June 15–19. Cost is $125 (10 percent discount to children and grandchildren of Museum of New Mexico Foundation members). Space is limited. Archaeology of the Lincoln County War

The Alexander and Susan McSween house was the scene of the most famous gun battle of the Lincoln County War, a violent struggle between two rival factions of businessmen, ranchers, and lawyers for political and economic control of the county. Architectural remains and burned artifacts from the McSween House in Lincoln, New Mexico, were recovered during archaeological test excavations conducted in the summers of 1986, 1987, and 1988. Archaeologist David Kirkpatrick will give a slide show and talk on what these excavations tell us about the War, the lifeways of the McSweens, and life in frontier New Mexico. The talk will be followed by a walking tour to the site of the McSween house.

Performance of works written by the composer of Cold Mountain

Hear "Echoes from Cold Mountain," a chamber music concert in the History Museum auditorium of works by Jennifer Higdon, the Pulitzer Prize-winning composer who was commissioned to write the score for the operatic version of Charles Frazier’s novel, Cold Mountain, debuting at the Santa Fe Opera this summer. The works will be performed by the Chatter chamber music group of Albuquerque, along with members of the Santa Fe Opera’s orchestra, soprano Adelaide Boedecker, mezzo-soprano Megan Marino, poet Demetria Martinez, and the Del Sol String Quartet. Adams was one of the first donors to the Palace of the Governors Photo Archives’ Photo Legacy Project, which aims to boost the holdings of contemporary photographers. Update: Due to a conflict with the Santa Fe Opera, the original time for this event, Aug. 13, had to be canceled. Miguel Harth-Bedoya graciously offered to move it to 2 pm on Wednesday, Aug. 12, to ensure it happens.
Join distinguished conductor Miguel Harth-Bedoya for a multimedia presentation about the music of South American regions connected by the great Inka Trail during the Spanish colonial era. "The Sights and Sounds of the Inka Trail" is part of the exhibition Painting the Divine: Images of Mary in the New World and is presented for free in the History Museum auditorium. Doors open at 1:30 pm.
Harth-Bedoya is the music director of the Fort Worth Symphony and chief conductor of the Norwegian Radio Orchestra. He also conducts the world-premiere performances of Jennifer Higdon’s opera, Cold Mountain, at the Santa Fe Opera in August 2015. Harth-Bedoya is also the founder and artistic director of Caminos del Inka, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to performing and promoting the music of the Americas.

Artist’s Talk
Originally from Crystal, NM, on the Navajo Reservation, Roanhorse resides in Santa Fe. The artist draws from his culture, creating new visions of contemporary design. He learned metalsmithing from his father, and has continued to further his knowledge of techniques and designs. He is a painter and a sculptor as well as a jeweler, and his jewelry is often reffered to as three-dimensional sculpture.
Michael has won awards from Indian Market, the Heard Museum, Eiteljorg Museum, and NMAI.

Friends of Indian Art (FIA) invites their members to a program presenting Rose B. Simpson, a native of Santa Clara Pueblo, who was raised among an extended family of artists. Her mother, Roxanne Swentzell, is a well-known Indigenous ceramic sculptor, and her father, Patrick Simpson, was a contemporary artist working in wood and metal. Rose’s artistic expression has taken forms including sculpting, printmaking, drama and creative writing, as well as music and dance. Being of both Indigenous and Anglo descent, her work often signifies the continual struggle between the two worlds many modern Indigenous people experience. Join documentary maker Katrina Parks for a sneak peek at her newest interviews with former Harvey Girls in New Mexico. Joining her for a discussion following are Harvey family members and Stephen Fried, author of Appetite for America: Fred Harvey and the Business of Civilizing the Wild West—One Meal at a Time. Parks directed the 2013 documentary Harvey Girls: Opportunity Bound, and we’ll show it at 10 am, 11 am and noon. Free with admission; Sundays free to NM residents.

Oblique Views Exhibition OPENING!

Lecture, Dancers, Booksigning, and Hands-on Activities
Sunday, October 25 -- it’s the day to be on Museum Hill for the long-anticipated opening of Oblique Views: Archaeology, Photography and Time.
You’ll see historic images by Charles and Anne Lindbergh side by side with those of contemporary aerial photographer Adriel Heisey -- some of the changes in the landscape (Canyon de Chelly, Chaco Canyon, Galisteo) are profound, others are more subtle.
Photographer Adriel Heisey speaks at 1pm and again at 3pm. The Red Turtle Dancers of Pojoaque and Santa Clara Pueblos will display a butterfly dance, buffalo dance, and rain dance. Dance times are scheduled for 2pm and 4pm.
Of course we’ll have the beautiful hardcover Oblique Views catalog available for purchase, with the contributers all present to sign.
A hands-on photography activity will be offered from 1 - 4pm.
Admission is free on Sundays for New Mexico residents.

Halloween Tricks, Treats, and Ghost Stories

Prowl through Telling New Mexico on a scavenger hunt for historic personalities in costume and get a historically themed Halloween mask as a treat. (Wear your own costume, too!) At 6 pm, author and folklorist Nasario Garcia tells tales of witches, ghosts and bogeymen inside the spooky Palace of the Governors. A Free Friday Evening event in collaboration with the Museum of Art’s Modernist scavenger hunt and live music.

Winter hours begin
New Mexico History Museum
Starting Nov. 1 through April, the New Mexico History Museum/Palace of the Governors will be closed on Mondays, but open 10 am to 5 pm Tuesday through Sunday. In addition, Free Friday Evenings, 5 to 8 pm, will change from every Friday to only the first Friday of each month. Summer hours resume May 1, 2016.

Called to Duty: The History of the New Mexico National Guard

Since the 16th century, New Mexicans have served, protected and defended this land. Learn about their decisive roles from the Civil War to the current day, along with the heroism of New Mexico’s 200th Coast Artillery, a National Guard unit that became ensnared in the Bataan Death March. Veterans Services Secretary Jack Fox leads a discussion with Brigadier General Andrew E. Salas, adjutant general for New Mexico; and Colonel Kenneth Nava, chief of staff for the New Mexico Army National Guard. A Free First Friday Evening event. (Free admission 5–8 pm.)

Death in the Civil War screening

With casualties in the Civil War reaching unfathomable numbers equalling about 2.5 percent of the entire population, the ways that both sides of the war grappled with death and dying changed drastically. In Death in the Civil War, a PBS documentary, we learn how America dealt with large-scale deaths of unidentified people and the cultural need for dying honorably. Part of the programming series for the museum’s exhibit, Fading Memories: Echoes of the Civil War, a collaboration with the Santa Fe Opera’s debut of Cold Mountain this August. Free with admission; NM residents free on Sundays.

During World War II, Santa Fe was the site of one of the nation’s largest Justice Department internment camps. It primarily housed Japanese immigrants, among them the Rev. Tamasaku Watanabe. On Sunday, November 15, at 2 pm, Watanabe’s granddaughter, Dr. Gail Okawa, speaks on a brain-twisting aspect of that heartbreaking period: Even as our government locked up Japanese residents over fears of their supposed disloyalty, their own children put on soldiers’ uniforms to defend the nation.

Poling-Kempes, an Abiquiu resident, has written numerous books about the Southwest, including Bone Horses, Ghost Ranch, and The Harvey Girls: Women Who Opened the West. Her most recent book is Ladies of the Canyons: A League of Extraordinary Women and Their Adventures in the American Southwest (University of Arizona Press, 2015).

Treasures from a Trunk: The Costumes of Los Pastores

Free First Friday
Get a peek at the Christmas-themed items that the museum found inside an early 20th-century steamer trunk during this Free First Friday event. Ca. 1915 costumes, including a horned devil, boy angel and hermit, reveal past performances of a traditional Hispanic Christmas play, Los Pastores (Shepherds’ Tales; also called Las Pastorelas). Bolstered by images in the Palace of the Governors Photo Archives, they help tell a story of how New Mexicans re-enacted the play in days gone by.

An Unbroken Thread: Wool & Weaving in Northern New Mexico

See a new film produced by the Española Valley Fiber Arts Center, examine touchable textiles and try your hand at weaving on Sunday, December 6, from 1:30–4 pm. The 20-minute film, An Unbroken Thread: Wool & Weaving in Northern New Mexico, will be shown at 1:30 and 2:30 pm in the History Museum auditorium. Throughout the afternoon, representatives from the Española Valley Fiber Arts Center and museum educators will engage visitors in the materials of the weaver’s trade and showcase finished textiles. This event is free with admission. Sundays are free to NM residents; children 16 and under are free daily.

The annual candle-lit procession of Las Posadas travels around the Santa Fe Plaza and concludes in the Palace Courtyard. This version of an old Hispanic tradition recreates Mary and Joseph’s search for a place to give birth to the Baby Jesus—and throws in a few devils for good measure. Stay for carols, cookies and hot cider in the Palace Courtyard. Free.
