Pottery Demonstration Series
Museum of Indian Arts and Culture
1:00 PM - 4:00 PM
with Dina Velarde (Jicarilla Apache)

Join us as we continue our popular Pueblo pottery series, this month featuring Jicarilla Apache artist Dina Velarde.

A graduate of the Institute of American Indian Arts, where she received a BA in Museum Studies, Velarde parlayed her experiences into her position at MIAC (education assistant), which affords her the opportunity to work with schools and other youth groups visiting the museum. “My lifelong study of the arts has allowed me to come full circle,” says Velarde. “Working at MIAC, I am now able to assist in creating art projects intertwined with the teaching of Native history, while being surrounded and learning from museum professionals.”

Velarde’s specialty is micaceous pottery, ranging from light golden honey hues to rich dark black, all with the glistening mica specks that are enhanced with traditional firing. All her work is done by hand following the traditions of her ancestors.

Her work has no doubt benefited from her AA in Studio Arts, which included painting, drawing, and photography – her other specialty. “Growing up on the Jicarilla reservation, I always had an appreciation for art, much being encouraged by my grandmother, who did bead work and basketry,” says Velarde. “It wasn’t until much later that I would come to focus on micaceous pottery and photography.”

“Pueblo Oral Traditions: Storytelling Through Music” Presented by Marlon Magdalena
Coronado Historic Site
2:00 PM - 2:00 PM
Sunday, January 20, 2019 @ 2 pm at the DeLavy House

Many indigenous communities throughout the New World do not have written languages. This means that traditional cultural knowledge of those communities has to be passed orally from one generation to the next. Music often plays a pivotal role in how communities pass on knowledge, specifically during participation in seasonal cultural activities. The focus of this presentation will be on storytelling through music as learned and taught by a Jemez Pueblo tribal member.

The Galisteo Basin; Pueblo Communities across the Threshold of Spanish Colonization

Today’s Galisteo Basin is a vast and inspiring landscape on the edge of Santa Fe. Open range land has preserved a record of history that is a remarkable testament to powerful influences, natural and cultural, from the fifteenth through seventeenth centuries. These three centuries encompass dramatic changes in climate, economy, population, and organization of Pueblo communities, even before the initial Spanish expeditions of the sixteenth century.

Eric Blinman Director, Office of Archaeological Studies will discuss how the Seventeeth century Spanish Colonization changed the trajectory of the Galisteo Basins cultural history in both expected and unexpected ways, culminating in the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. But perhaps the most dramatic transformation occurred in the few years immediately after the Revolt. By the Reconquest, the large Pueblo communities had moved north, setting the stage for the Euroamerican-dominated pastoral landscape of today.

Pueblo Pottery Demonstration
Museum of Indian Arts and Culture
1:00 PM - 4:00 PM
with Ray Garcia (San Felipe Pueblo))

Ray Garcia (or Rayduck) first learned about pottery from his grandmother, who he helped collect clay at the southern end of San Felipe Pueblo. Since then, he has gathered, processed, and created pottery with San Felipe clay. He began formal instruction from 2009 to 2012, under the instruction of Clarence Cruz at the Poeh Center in Pojoaque. While at the Poeh, he learned to gather, process, and make pots with micaceous clay. He also studied with Max D. Early of Laguna from 2012 to 2014 learning traditional methods of gathering clay and pottery making in Laguna Pueblo.

Since he is from both San Felipe and Santa Ana Pueblos, Garcia has begun to work with both styles in his painting and clay shaping.

Garcia has won various awards for both pottery and jewelry at the Heard Museum Indian Art Market in Phoenix; Red Earth Indian Art Market in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Cahokia Mounds Contemporary Indian Art Show, in Collinsville, Illinois; and the Artesian Arts Festival in Sulphur, Oklahoma. His work has also been shown at the Southwestern Indian Art Market in Tucson, Arizona; Indian Summer in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and the Haskell Indian Art Market in Lawrence, Kansas.

Talk on the Tribesourcing Project with Jennifer Jenkins, PhD
Museum of International Folk Art
Sunday, March 1, 2020 2:00-3:30pm in the Vernick auditorium

“Tribesourcing is a digital humanities project, where existing "social studies" films from the American Indian Film Gallery, made in the 1950s and 1960s are re- recorded with new narrations by community members and elders from Native American communities. This “tribesourcing” method allows for identification of local knowledge that might otherwise be lost, as well as providing a rich, community-based metadata record for each film. Jennifer Jenkins, PhD, Tribesourcing Project Manager, and English Professor at the University of Arizona, will demonstrate the merging of old video and new audio in Mukurtu at Tribesourcingfilm.com and discuss what she has learned in the process of digitally repatriating these midcentury films.”

Life in the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression in New Mexico

A presentation by Richard Melzer, Ph.D., Emeritus Professor of History, UNM Valencia Campus

Of all the New Deal agencies of the Great Depression era, the Civilian Conservation Corps was the most popular and, many would argue, the most successful. Richard Melzer’s lecture will focus on the importance of the CCC in New Mexico as a whole, but especially on the lives of the 54,000 young men who enrolled in the program and served in the state.

Living on their own, getting along with others, learning a strong work ethic, and helping to conserve the environment were some of the most important lessons the men learned. Most considered their CCC experience the turning point of their lives. Surviving the Great Depression, these men were well prepared to help the country win World War II and succeed in the post-war period.

Free Auditorium event. Bottled water only please. Limited seating.

Pueblo Communities across the Threshold of Spanish Colonization: Examples of Resiliency

Please join Prter Swentzell, Assistant Professor and Chair of Indigenous Liberal Studies, Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA), as he presents at our June Friends of History lecture series event.

Pueblo peoples have managed to find creative ways to survive and thrive as sedentary agriculturalists for thousands of years in the high desert environment of the southwestern United States.

Through the impositions of various waves of colonialism, Pueblo people have relied on their axiologies to maintain strong linguistic and cultural traditions in the communities they have lived in for centuries.

"Blooks: The Art of Books That Aren’t"
New Mexico History Museum
6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Please join us for a particularly fun and engaging talk by Mindell Dubansky, author of "Blooks: The Art of Books That Aren’t."

Ms. Dubansky, who is head of Book Conservation at the Thomas J. Watson Library of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, will speak on her collection (as featured on the CBS Sunday Morning show and in The New York Times) of objects that are made to look like books but serve other purposes, sometimes practical, sometimes puzzling, and often humorous.

Ms. Dubansky’s talk coincides with a research trip to New Mexico for the Met’s Paper Legacy Project. She has been conducting interviews and making studio visits to a number of New Mexico artists who work in the field of decorative paper. New Mexico plays a significant role in the spread of this artistic movement. The evening’s program is sponsored by the Palace Press and the Santa Fe Book Arts Group.

To summarize the rationale behind the project, she says “The opportunity to curate a contemporary American decorative paper exhibit will provide a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to educate and inspire the public, the artistic community and our bookish peers, by introducing them to the life’s work of a unique, influential, culturally vulnerable and relatively unknown cadre of book and paper arts heroes.”

Fifty years of American Decorative Papermaking from The Metropolitan Museum of Art will showcase the Paper Legacy Project and will open at the Grolier Club, New York’s renowned “temple of the book” in 2022.

Free Auditorium event-bottled water only please

Esteban: The African Slave Who Explored America

Please join Dennis Herrick, Author; Lecturer Emeritus of Journalism, UNM, for our July Friends of History lecture series event.

When Pueblo Indians say, “The first white man we saw was a black man,” they are referring to Esteban, who came to New Mexico in 1539.

Books about the history of America have ignored Esteban or belittled his importance, often using his Spanish slave nickname, Estebanico. This book gives the African Esteban full credit for his courage and his skill as a linguist and cultural intermediary, who was trusted and respected by Indians from many tribes across the continent.

The Land that Enchants Me So: Picturing Popular Songs of New Mexico
New Mexico History Museum
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Please join James Keller, writer, lecturer, and curator of the museum’s exhibit titled “The Land That Enchants Me So” for a talk on Elizabeth Garrett (1885-1947), the daughter of Sheriff Pat Garrett, of famously killed Billy the Kid. Ms. Garrett was a remarkable figure in New Mexico’s musical history, an accomplished singer, pianist, and composer and is most remembered for writing the official state song, “O, Fair New Mexico.” Several years ago, James Keller unearthed and acquired the only known recording of Elizabeth Garrett, which she made in 1924. We will look at her remarkable career and her talents as a venerated figure in New Mexico’s cultural landscape. As a part of this lecture, Keller will offer the first modern hearing of the “B-side” of that record, on which Garrett performs another of her songs, “Señorita.”

Pueblo Independence Day
Jemez Historic Site
7:00 AM - 3:00 PM

Come join us for our 16th annual commemoration of Pueblo Independence Day. On August 10, 1680—the Pueblo People of New Mexico—aided by Apache and Navajo allies—launched a successful rebellion against Spanish colonization. Commemorative activities will begin with a pilgrimage run from Walatowa plaza in Jemez Pueblo to Giusewa Pueblo kiva at Jemez Historic Site (approximately a half marathon or 13 miles). Participating in this run, or supporting a runner, is a way to pay tribute to the Ancestors and show appreciation for the sacrifices they made. Their brave resistance helped preserve the Pueblo way of life: our culture, our languages and our right to one day reclaim our aboriginal lands. The run begins at 7:00AM, and the general public is welcome to participate. Volunteers will provide water stations at one mile intervals, and a shuttle service for slow runners will be available. At 10:00AM, guest speakers will welcome all the runners and their sponsors to the site. The following festivities, between 10:30AM and 3:00PM, will feature: Jemez traditional dances and Native American flute music. There will also be authentic Native arts & crafts and Native food. There is no admission fee for any of the activities related to this event. Call 575-829-3530 for more information.

5:30 PM - 6:30 PM
Lecture with Dr. Deborah Dorotinsky

The Museum of International Folk Art welcomes Dr. Deborah Dorotinsky of Mexico City’s Instituto de Investigaciones Estéticas to discuss folk art and dipolomacy.

This lecture explores the exhibition of folk arts prepared by the Olympic Organizing Committee for the XIX Olympic Games in Mexico in 1968, and the ways popular craft was used as a form of cultural diplomacy from 1940-1970. Nearly 50 years after the original exhibition, in 2016, a group of students and curators at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) revived the exhibition, highlighting its history and the shifting definition artisanal design, craft, folk art and arte popular

Dr. Deborah Dorotinsky is a full-time tenured researcher at the Instituto de Investigaciones Estéticas, UNAM and a professor of historiography of art history, history of Mexican ethnographic photography and gender and visual cultures 1920-1950 in the Art History Graduate Program at the same university.

Lamy’s Letters: A New Look at Santa Fe’s First Bishop

Rick Hendricks and Dr. Claude Fouillade, a retired French professor at New Mexico State University, have been working on a project to translate and edit a selection of Jean-Baptiste Lamy’s letters.

Lamy wrote in French, Spanish, English, and Latin over the course of his career. Reading the letters in their entirety gives a new understanding of Lamy’s life and times. The letters also present a different view of certain events than one gets from reading Paul Horgan’s Lamy of Santa Fe, winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1976.

In this talk, Rick will show how Horgan used Lamy’s correspondence to construct his narrative history.

EXHIBITION OPENING!
Museum of Indian Arts and Culture
Diego Romero Vs. the End of Art

Diego Romero vs. the End of Art will be a dynamic exploration of a Cochiti Pueblo artist’s journey through life as depicted through his work.  For decades, California born Cochiti potter Diego Romero has created renowned historical and autobiographical artworks. Acclaimed for his neo-Mimbres pottery illustrating Pueblo Indian history, his father’s Korean War stories, and his relationships with women, family, substances and art, Romero’s work lays bare the life of one Native artist and Native history.  The exhibition narrative will be a biographical and culture history in conjunction with a conflict against a shadowy figure known only as the End of Art. Throughout the exhibition video presentations will feature interviews with the artist and others detailing his path and the evolution of his art. This will be one of the largest assemblages of Romero’s ceramic works and his lesser known multi-media drawings. Per conversations with the artist, several family members will be included as part of his story and as necessary allies in his battle with the nebulous nemesis, the End of Art. In an effort to engage a younger audience and the non-traditional museum visitor, the catalog will be a hybrid of a traditional volume combined with elements of a graphic novel. This method will convey Romero’s stories of cultural and personal endurance. It is hoped that Native youth in particular will relate to their story through art.  The goals of this exhibition are to share Romero’s unique and engaging stories of life and struggle through a cultural and pop culture lens, and the visitor will learn of Native survival and ultimately celebration.

Pueblo Pottery and Embroidery Demonstration
Museum of Indian Arts and Culture
1:00 PM - 4:00 PM
with Michael Bancroft (Ohkay Owingeh) and Shawn Tafoya (Santa Clara)

Michael Bancroft is a micaceous pottery instructor who discovered his love of clay in 2004. He feels his inspiration comes from his children’s grandmother, Mary Sedillo, and his grandmother, Emily Povijua, both of whom made pottery. He has taken and  instructed many art classes at the Poeh Cultural Center.

While also a skilled potter, Shawn Tafoya will demonstrate embroidery, another of his passions. Although a traditionalist in terms of materials and technique, his embroidery is strikingly innovative. Ideas for his work come from different sources, including nature, his Pueblo and other tribal groups, pop culture and his family’s art.

Hardship, Greed, and Sorrow: An Officer’s Photo Album of 1866 New Mexico Territory
New Mexico History Museum
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Please join us for a talk by author Devorah Romanek, joined by Hannah Abelbeck, New Mexico History Museum Photo Archivist, on this compelling book which captures a fraught and complex moment in the history of the American Southwest, and includes a Preface written by Daniel Kosharek, previous Photo Curator at the New Mexico History Museum, Santa Fe, NM.

In the aftermath of the Civil War, the New Mexico Territory endured painful years of hardship and ongoing strife. During this turbulent period, a US military officer stationed in the territory assembled an album of photographs, a series of still shots taken by one or more anonymous photographers. Now, some 150 years later, this remarkable volume reproduces the anonymous officer’s “souvenir album” in its totality.

Offering an important glimpse of the American Southwest in the mid-1860s, the photo album places the photographs in historical context in connection to the Civil War and Reconstruction periods, including the French intervention in New Mexico and the internment of Navajos at the Bosque Redondo Indian Reservation.

In addition to containing what may be the earliest extant photographs of Navajo Indians, the album features both studio and field images of U.S. Army officers, Mexican politicians, and various sites throughout New Mexico.

Books for purchase will be made available from the Museum Foundation shop, located in the History Museum.

Free event-bottled water only please

The 1776 Expedition of Dominguez and Escalante

In the Summer of 1776, two Franciscan Friars left Santa Fe on a journey to find an overland route to the only other Spanish settlement : Monterey, California. Although they never achieved this goal they instead circumnavigated the Colorado Plateau, created the first map of this region and documented the customs and living situations of the Ute Indians who occupied the regions north of Santa Fe and as far west as the Great Salt Lake. The journey covered 1800 miles and took six months.

Over a five year period Greg Mac Gregor and Siegfreid Halus (now deceased) retraced this route and photographed the terrain and legacy of this expedition.

The photographs in the lecture are from the book : In Search of Dominguez and Escalante (Museum of New Mexico Press) by Mac Gregor and Halus and will be on exhibition at the Palace of the Governors , Santa Fe, during the year 2020.

The Museum of International Folk Art will be one of the first museums to present a large-scale yōkai-centered exhibition in the United States.

Vivid in Japanese art and imagination are creatures that are at once ghastly and comical. Yōkai generally refers to demons, ghosts, shapeshifters, and “strange” and supernatural beings. Specific creatures are commonly associated with classical literature, folklore, theatrical performances, festivals, art, and other forms of expressive culture. Yōkai are also prevalent in contemporary Japanese popular culture; you find them in manga (comics), anime (animation), and character-based games such as Pokémon (“pocket monster”). In addition to participatory gallery crafts, the exhibition will include an immersive, (a Japanese “ghost house”), a popular form of entertainment in Japanese amusement parks.

MIAC Curators Examine Your Treasures

MIAC Curators gather in the lobby of the Museum on the third Wednesday of each month awaiting whatever treasures may walk through the door. This is your opportunity to bring a family heirloom, something special from your collection, or a piece you know nothing about. Naturally, they prefer items from the American Southwest (in keeping with the museum’s focus), but they will check out anything you bring in.

Federal law prohibits curators from "appraising" any items, but they will direct you to appropriate resources. For more information, visit this page: http://indianartsandculture.org/lets-take-a-look.
