Museum of Indian Arts and Culture

with Dr. Matthew Martinez

The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture announces a screening of Canes of Power. Following the film, a Q&A will be led by Dr. Matthew Martinez, the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture’s deputy director, and associate producer of the film.

Canes of Power, narrated by Cherokee Actor Wes Studi – a recent Academy Award recipient – is the story of President Abraham Lincoln’s gift of engraved wood canes gifted to each of New Mexico’s 19 Pueblo nations. The canes symbolized the recognition of tribal sovereignty at the very same time 13 Southern states were seeking their own sovereignty (in the form of succession) from the United States.

"Heading into the Wind: A Memoir"
New Mexico History Museum
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Please join Jack Loeffler for a book presentation and signing for his new autobiography.

With the temperament of Santa Claus and the tenacity of a badger, Jack Loeffler reveals his compassion and concern for Southwestern traditional cultures and their respective habitats in the wake of Manifest Destiny. Working both as an individual and with comrades--including Edward Abbey and Gary Snyder--he was part of an early coterie of counterculturalists and environmentalists who fought to thwart the plunder of natural resources in the Southwest. Loeffler, a former jazz musician, fire lookout, museum curator, bioregionalist, and self-taught aural historian, shares his humor and imagination, his adventures, observations, reflections, and meditations along the trail in his retelling of a life well lived. In this honest memoir, he advises each and every one of us to go skinny-dipping joyfully in the flow of Nature to better understand where we’re headed.

Native Pottery Demonstration
Museum of Indian Arts and Culture
1:00 PM - 4:00 PM
with Helen Bird, Santo Domingo Pueblo

Helen D. Bird is a self-taught master potter who learned about traditional pottery making by watching her great-aunt, whom she only knew as Sah’NaYa. Bird started experimenting with pottery making in 1984. Today, her work is sought by collectors and is housed in museums and local collections. Helen has also continued making utilitarian pottery as well as ceremonial pieces.

Bird was commissioned to create a Native American designed Starbucks travel mug which has been sold world-wide. Although Bird focuses on traditional Pueblo polychrome and micaceous pottery, she has recently added a contemporary flair to her traditional designs.

Bird takes pride in gathering and processing all natural, local materials including the clays, temper and paints. Her pots are traditionally fired at her family home. All processes are being passed down to her children and grandchildren.

Talk on the Tribesourcing Project with Jennifer Jenkins, PhD
Museum of International Folk Art
2:00 PM - 3:30 PM
Sunday, March 1, 2020 2:00-3:30pm in the Vernick auditorium.

“Tribesourcing is a digital humanities project, where existing "social studies" films from the American Indian Film Gallery, made in the 1950s and 1960s are re- recorded with new narrations by community members and elders from Native American communities. This “tribesourcing” method allows for identification of local knowledge that might otherwise be lost, as well as providing a rich, community-based metadata record for each film.

Jennifer Jenkins, PhD, Tribesourcing Project Manager, and English Professor at the University of Arizona, will demonstrate the merging of old video and new audio in Mukurtu at Tribesourcingfilm.com and discuss what she has learned in the process of digitally repatriating these midcentury films.”

with Dolores Lewis and Claudia Mitchell (Acoma Pueblo)

Join us on Wednesday, March 11, for a special demonstration with Dolores Lewis and her niece, Claudia Mitchell (both Acoma Pueblo). Dolores began practicing pottery making early in her life while Claudia is a relative newcomer, having started in 2013. Both potters benefited from the instruction and assistance of Lucy Lewis, Dolores’s mother, an accomplished and renowned Acoma potter who Dolores credits with helping to show her the way and encouraging her to keep this art alive. Dolores helped Lucy wet burnish and white slip her pots with the rocks she continues to use. Dolores and Claudia are committed to using resources found only at Acoma Pueblo, from the clay to the paints, and the fine yucca tools used for decorating each piece.

LITERACY VOLUNTEERS of SANTA FE

Please see the attached links (to follow) for presentations related to the global theme: Literacy

(links will remain active following this schedueled event)

Since 1985, Literacy Volunteers of Santa Fe (LVSF) has been serving the community by providing literacy instruction for adults and their families. We believe that literacy is essential to improving the quality of life of individuals, promoting economic growth, and building an informed, responsible citizenry.  Our purpose is to offer programs that provide free, quality tutoring in basic literacy and English as a Second Language, financial literacy, health literacy, citizenship and numeracy skills.

Over the past 34 years, LVSF has trained 4,902 tutors, who have provided over 504,327 hours of instruction to help more than 13,780 adult students obtain essential skills and reach their fullest potential. This represents volunteer contributions equivalent to over $12 million. Literacy Volunteers of Santa Fe is the only program in Santa Fe County that provides free literacy tutoring services for adults.

Herflag: Collaborative Art Flag Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment

In the interest of public health, Marilyn Artus has decided to cancel her live performance in Santa Fe. Instead, she’ll be live-streaming the sewing from the Her Flag Facebook and Instagram pages at the set time of the event.

The celebration is called Her Flag. Her Flag is a giant collaborative art flag. A work-in-progress that’s making its way across the nation, growing stripe by stripe and state by state.  Her Flag will be in Santa Fe, New Mexico on Thursday, April 30th 2020.

Founder, artist Marilyn Artus, sews each state’s stripe, which was designed by a woman artist in that state, onto the flag at a live event in each capital city. This is her “love letter” to all the men and women who worked to pass the 19th amendment and she uses it as a platform to encourage women to exercise their right to vote that so many fought for just 100 years ago.

CANCELED: The Quilt Project: How Art Translates Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women
Museum of Indian Arts and Culture
5:00 PM - 7:00 PM
A Friends of Indian Art Member Event

The Red Quilt Solidarity Project (RQSP) is a national initiative to raise awareness of violence against women and children with a focus on Missing/Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG). The RQSP is open to all people who wish to speak out about violence against women and children all over the world. The RQSP was initiated by Tina Sparks as her BFA Senior Project at the Institute of American Indian Arts. The project was publicly launched in February, 2019, and has received numerous panel contributions from across the country. The intention for this project is to be a visual voice to evoke visibility, funding and change for issues surrounding violence against women and children. The long-term goal for the Red Quilt Solidarity Project is to transport and display the quilts/panels on the national mall in Washington, DC, much like the AIDS quilt in the 1980’s. Tonight’s event will be a collaborative presentation of information surrounding issues of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women initiating and inviting community conversation.

Please note that you must be a member of the Friends of Indian Art in order to participate in FIA events. You can learn more about joining the friends group by visiting its page on the Museum of New Mexico Foundation’s website.

Bears Ears: The Vision for an Indigenous National Monument
Museum of Indian Arts and Culture
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
a Zoom lecture with Angelo Baca

Based on a film about Bears Ears, this talk with Angelo Baca (Navajo / Hopi) ties together many different strands of Utah Navajo culture and history, San Juan county politics, Navajo Nation involvement in the region, and anthropological research. It seeks to cover a basic introduction to the importance of the landscape of the Indigenous people by the Indigenous peoples of that region. Of course, it is only a foundation from which to examine a particular perspective - the Indigenous perspective - and it often is not given serious consideration, or left out entirely. The project tells the story through an Indigenous lens.

Breaking Down Cardboard Boxes: How Archaeology Can Erase Histories and How It Can Reveal Them
Museum of Indian Arts and Culture
6:00 PM - 7:00 PM
with Dr. Lewis Borck

Dr. Lewis Borck studies the material histories of the past peoples in the American Southwest and the Caribbean. He is particularly interested in how social movements and contentious politics shaped religion and politics through time as well as how modern politics and worldviews recreate the histories and ideas of the “West” in the Indigenous past. For this talk, Dr. Borck will explore how archaeologists and historians create history, how that can erase the history of commoners, particularly of their politics and revolutions. He will use 15 years of research in the Gallina region of New Mexico, including a current field school, as a case study to contextualize many of these ideas. Russell Sanchez is a very familiar and lauded name to Native art collectors, most recently taking home the Best of Pottery award at 2019 Indian Market. His historic adobe home sits right on the main plaza of San Ildefonso Pueblo, but he has continued to add on to the space over the years to house his growing art collection. VIRTUAL TALK: What is Folk? Museums, Markets, and the Invention of an American Art Tradition
Museum of International Folk Art
4:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Virtual Talk by Emelie Gevalt, curator of Folk Art at the American Folk Art Museum in New York City

Since its popularization in the 1920s, the term “American folk art” has been used to mean different things to different people, ranging from Americana collectors to modern artists, dealers, curators, and scholars across multiple disciplines. The genre has historically encompassed an equally broad range of objects, from carousel figures, quilts, and whirligigs to forms traditionally considered more academic, such as portraiture and landscape painting. Drawing on examples from the collection of the American Folk Art Museum, this talk will offer a glimpse into the history of a sometimes unwieldy collecting category, tracing its development in both commercial and museum contexts, from the early 20th century into the present day.

New Technology in Art: Innovation at the Institute of American Indian Arts
Museum of Indian Arts and Culture
3:00 PM - 5:00 PM
A Friends of Indian Art Member Event

Innovation has been a tradition in Native arts from the very beginning. Indigenous cultures have adopted whatever materials or technologies have been available to speak about the things those cultures held most important. From pre-contact ceramic work and shell carving, to the use of trade-beads and European metalworking technologies, to our current era of digital design and fabrication, Native artists have embraced the most current and cutting edge tools to create works of art that speak to the issues that face their people. The Digital Fabrication Lab at the Institute of American Indian Arts, in coordination with its other studios, is working to put those tools into the hands of the next generation of innovative Indigenous artists. The work being produced in conjunction with the IAIA FabLab, from students, staff, faculty, and artists-in-residence, spans an incredibly diverse set of materials, topics, and practices, continuing the long and storied tradition of artistic innovation in Native art. We will hear from Brian Fleetwood (Muscogee/Creek), Assistant Professor in Studio Art at IAIA.

Please note that you must be a member of the Friends of Indian Art in order to participate in FIA events. You can learn more about about joining the friends group by visiting its page on the Museum of New Mexico Foundation’s website.
