During the 1760s and 1770s, the present Los Luceros Historic Site was situated amid the thrust of a forceful Comanche expansion into northern New Mexico. Let’s Take a Look
Museum of Indian Arts and Culture
12:00 PM - 2:00 PM

On Wednesday, July 21th, MIAC staff are returning to the museum’s virtual lobby to look at your treasures. Bring a weaving, ceramic pot, piece of jewelry (or something else!) to our Zoom meeting, and curator of ethnology Tony Chavarria (Santa Clara Pueblo), curator of archaeological research collections Julia Clifton, other staff members will attempt to identify and explain the item. Curators are experts in items from the Southwest, but are willing to take a look at anything that is “brought in.” Previous attendees have often found that the experience of chatting with a group of curators is often just as, or perhaps even more, informative and enjoyable than the identification of the object.

Please note that federal and state policies prohibit curators from appraising an item; the museum neither appraises or authenticates works of art.

**Even though MIAC is open to the public, we are continuing our virtual programming until further notice.

Collecting Jewelry: Conversation with the Curator
Museum of Indian Arts and Culture
10:00 AM - 11:00 AM
Conversations with Michael Roanhorse, Jennifer Curtis and Allen Aragon

Continuing public programming for Collecting Jewelry: H. P. Mera’s Trip to Navajo Country in 1932, the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture are pleased to host three contemporary Navajo/Diné jewelers in conversation with exhibition curator Ross Altshuler and MIAC assistant curator, Lillia McEnaney. Together, these artists will tell their memories of learning how to make jewelry, share stories about their own artistic inspirations and innovations, and reflect on the larger current moment in the Native art world.

Collecting Jewelry showcases 160 pieces of jewelry made between 1880-1930 that Dr. Mera gathered. These pieces were made with rudimentary tools and without available references for style and technique. The amazing pieces created form the basis of Navajo/Diné silversmithing and inspired the generations that followed.

Franklin Peters (Acoma Pueblo)

Born into the Sky Clan on Acoma Pueblo, Franklin Peters learned the art of pottery making as he grew up surrounded by some of Acoma’s most distinguished potters.

In 2011, Franklin was honored with the Rollin and Mary Ella King Native Artist Fellowship at the School for Advanced Research in Santa Fe. While there he studied the methods and designs of his Acoma ancestors and how to incorporate those methods and designs into his contemporary work. Today, Franklin’s pottery is characterized by bold slips and colors. He likes sharp lines in his striking mixes of traditional and contemporary Acoma and Laguna designs.

Being from the Sky Clan, Franklin says he is always praying for rain. On his pots, the thin fine lines symbolize rain and those constant prayers.

“The Road to Santa Fe” A Convergence of Cultures
New Mexico History Museum
2:00 PM - 3:30 PM
A film presentation to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Santa Fe Trail

The history of the Santa Fe Trail provides the focus of a new documentary being distributed to PBS stations throughout the US this Fall. Entitled “The Road to Santa Fe,” this 90-minute program traces the main routes of the trail from Missouri to Santa Fe, spotlighting some of the landmark venues associated with it. Produced to coincide with the bicentennial of the trail, the documentary begins with the departure of a small group of traders from Franklin, Missouri in September of 1821 on the first successful trading expedition to Santa Fe. It proceeds through the six decades of the trail’s active trading life, highlighting the main events and historical characters connected to it. With the assistance of noted historians such as Leo Oliva, a founding member of the Santa Fe Trail Association, and Frances Levine, former director of the New Mexico History Museum who currently serves as president of the Missouri Historical Society, the documentary reflects upon the role of the Santa Fe Trail in the westward expansion of the United States and its impact on the relationship between the US and Mexico. It also explores the impact of the trail on the indigenous inhabitants of the region through which it passed. The documentary includes narrated excerpts from journals written by historical figures who traveled the trail, including William Becknell, George Sibley, Josiah Gregg, Susan Shelby Magoffin and Marian Sloan Russell. The producer of the documentary, Dave Kendall of Prairie Hollow Productions, tells of his family’s connection to the trail as one of his ancestors gained employment as a teamster and subsequently settled on a farm near Council Grove, Kansas, a noted rendezvous site on the trail.

Seating will be limited.

Let’s Take a Look - November 2021
Museum of Indian Arts and Culture
12:00 PM - 2:00 PM
In-Person and Online Event

On November 17, 2021, MIAC staff are returning to the museum’s virtual lobby to look at your treasures for Let’s Take a Look. Bring a weaving, ceramic, piece of jewelry (or something else!) to our Zoom meeting, and curator of ethnology Tony Chavarria (Santa Clara Pueblo), curator of archaeological research collections Julia Clifton, and other staff members will attempt to identify and explain the item.

Curators are experts in items from the Southwest, but are willing to take a look at anything that is “brought in.” Previous attendees have often found that the experience of chatting with a group of curators is often just as—or perhaps even more—informative and enjoyable than the identification of the object itself.

Please note that federal and state policies prohibit curators from appraising an item; the museum neither appraises or authenticates works of art.
