New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science Announces New Children’s Exhibition in the Kiwanis Learning Garden Opening on October 31, 2016

October 17, 2016

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE—October 17, 2016 (Albuquerque NM):  The New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science announces a new exhibition created by children, installed outdoors in the Kiwanis Learning Garden, now open to the public for viewing.

Children in a family afterschool family program at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science have spent the past nine months researching the ways animals and plants interact in the Kiwanis Learning Garden, thanks to a Project Learning Tree GreenWorks! grant. The Museum was one of 23 recipients nationwide to receive support for environmental service-learning projects that involve children’s decision-making.

The title of the service-learning project was “The Synergy of Animals and Plants.” Beginning in January, each of the 15 young Researcher/Artists (ages 5-11) chose a garden animal to study, made a puppet, researched their animal, and created a show to share their research. In the summer weeks they gathered in the outdoor garden classroom to create a mosaic of their animal. This month, their report texts and mosaics will be installed for the benefit of the public who use the garden.

On Sunday afternoon, October 30, 2016 from 3pm to 4:30pm, there will be a dedication ceremony for the new family-created exhibition and the exhibition will be open to the public on Oct. 31, 2016.

“We’re delighted to have been selected for this wonderful project that blends art and science in such a creative and meaningful way,“ said Museum Director Margie Marino. “Children and their families had the opportunity to make something beautiful and lasting while learning about  science in their backyards.

The Museum and the families wish to thank Project Learning Tree, as well as the following partners for supporting the Researcher/Artists all year long: Kiwanis Club of Albuquerque, Mosaic Artists of New Mexico, Plants of the Southwest, and New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science Bioscience Curator, Education, and Graphics staff.

This private dedication of the new children’s exhibit is an opportunity to thank all partners listed above, and members of the media are invited.
